a cheap way for LS1 T56
ok i am on a limited budget like most of you here. i needed a T56 but in texas they range from 1.2K to 3k for a used one (normally 4 to 6 for sale state wide). well did some research on the T56 years model from 93 to 2004. they are basically the same expect for adapter plate, bellhousing, input shaft, and slave bearing. now taking this into consideration i insted of looking for a LS1 T56, i looked for a LT1 T56. i found one in san antonio out of a 97 trans am for 800 very low milage (when i looked in the tranny it was in perfect condition). now the T56 wouldn't work with my engine because i have a 5.7L LM7 (no typo). i sold the parts that i couldn't use and bought the LS1 T56 parts that i needed to convert it from a LT1 T56 to a LS1 T56. today i installed the LS1 style input shaft completing the conversion. i got to thinkig about how much i spent. after everything i in the end spent around 500 for a great shap LS1 T56. so maybe this is a good alternative. for some that are curious about this but like me was unable to find anyone saying for 100% that this is possible...it is. i got the input shaft from ebay for 69 and the bell plus adatper plate with the slave bearing from a guy from this web site for 165

Im still a student and have done a 240sx LS1 swap, my damn 4l60e as usual took a dump on me, so Im going with a 260 getrag transmission swap from a BMW on my LS1... they withstand loads of power and Extremely cheap in my country... 75$ to 150$, I already got an LS1 T56 bellhousing and flywheel... I hope it works...

Glad you got hooked up, but was thinking either your math is wrong or you got over retail for the parts you sold:
$800 for the tranny + $234 for parts you bought = $1034
$1034-$500(amount you said you have in teh tranny) =$534 for parts you sold. So, you sold a LT bell, input shaft, and midplate for $534? OUCH for the guy that paid that.

see what type of spline your input shaft has, and find a clutch that will work with it. A getrag 260? What the hell is that?
You have alot to figure out before you are going to be able to see if it will work. I mean, you can make ANYTHING work, but is it WORTH the work is teh ??? you have to ask. How are you going to mount this Getrag to the LS1 bell? HAve you measured the length of the input shaft? Spline count?

I've seen it on my friends 5.0 Fox body mustang... the 260 getrag came on the e30 and e34 3.5L engine... the transmission takes alot of abuse, I've seen cars with 500whp abuse them for years...
I know the 5.0 isn't anywhere as power as the LS1, but it took the abuse from many many BMWs, and its 75 - 150 dollars in cost... so it shouldn't be a problem if found defected or if it ever broke...
A small question, if it worked on the 5.0 mustang, does it have the same spline count?

Well, I am not familiar with e34, 260 Getrag, so, its anybodies guess.
No, the input shaft is not the same as a 5.0. The depth is gonna be different as well. Again, how do you plan on mounting this Getrag to a LS1 motor??

I have a T56 bellhousing... Im going to either put the 260 getrag on the T56 bellhousing (customly) or am going to try and make an adapter between the bellhousing of the getrag and the engine... (flywheel and clutch T56)

Well, you are gonna have to change teh input shaft for one. Then, get readings on teh depth once you install the adapter plate, and then you will need to somehow come up with/make an adaper for the flywheel to push the flywheel back to make up for the distance the tranny will be pushed back with the adapter plate. (and get an extended pilot bushing) Seems like alot of work that in the long run will probaly come up close to the cost of a T56 once you add in adapters/spacers/input shafts etc....and then you still have tranny that is gonna be weaker than teh T56.
Let me make this clear: I am ALL for doing thigs differently than the other guy. Hence , my LSx in a Mustang among other things. I am just trying to point out things that you may not have thought of yet, so before you get to o deep into this conversion, you are aware of everything. Good luck with this.

Why on Earth would you pick this unit for a conversion ?
I have never worked on one but it looks a whole lot like the unit GM uses in their 1500 series / S10 trucks . Its called a NV3500 or slang term "Getrag" as well .

I don't see how you plan on using the GM t56 bellhousing on it for one and how you plan on addressing the shifter issue either . Just because its strong and cheap does not mean its worth the trouble to make it fit .

I don't know what other option do I have? I found a tremec gearbox somewhere here in lebanon, which looks bigger than most T5's... I guess its the old T56, that came on LT1s but how can I be sure?! it has Tremec written all over it, but its missing a shifter couldn't see if its a 6 speed... the guy says its for a Ford... but I doubt he knows what he's talking about...
