Firebird SSA
Unfortunately, I'm finding very little about them.
Only been mentioned twice on this site:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/pontiac-firebird-1967-2002/285690-planning-engine-swap.html - your post a couple days ago about an engine swap
https://ls1tech.com/forums/pontiac-firebird-1967-2002/283301-firebird-ssa.html - your post a week ago asking what 'SSA' meant
The reply to that from FBDYLVR says
http://www.ridejudge.com/ridedetails.asp?RideID=25931 - 1989 Pontiac Firebird SSA owned by Wayne H in Sacramento, CA
http://www.geocities.com/~lobird/geobook.html - a guestbook posting from a guy with one:
And that's everything.
I definitely recommend you contact http://www.phs-online.com/ and see what they can come up with about it. (And then once you get the information, post it here so people can actually find out about it in the future )

IIRC, SSA was the sport appearance package (exclusive to only a few states, I think CA was one of them) they gave to V6 Firebirds in 89. My old Firebird would've been an SSA because it had a bunch of options, and the T/A GFX, but they only had SSA badging for the first half of the year, and then dropped it (my old one was a late 89 car, see sig).

Well, it sure is nice finding your site! I own two birds and one I just purchased last week. I purchased a one family owned 89' that the two major parts dist. say is not listed in their records! The vin# is good(1G2FS21S5KL231756) except it is not listed in the parts suppliers books? The Bird has the TA and Anniver. ground effects on it, but has a 2.8 with the 700 R trans? Also on the rear deck just below the wing is an emblem(not decal) that say's "Firebird SSA"? The car was purchased from the California, Van Nuys plant. Next Generation say's it might be a proto type made up for a dealer? Also the wheels have a plastic not metal center with just the Bird in the center and Pontiac on the rim. They are premium wheels. The interior is cloth and very nice with T-tops.

Yes, I'm interested in seeing that info as well.
Here's what I found in the "Pontiac Firebird 1967-2000 Photo History" book written by George W. Scala:
Page 70: The following is the verbiage that is under the attached pic: "The front view of the 1989 Firebird with the Sport Appearance Package. Looking like a Trans Am or GTA, only the rims, hood, and rear spoiler gave it away. 15-inch wheels, the regular Firebird rear spoiler and the plain flat hood came on this bird. Firebirds in the Los Angeles area had "Firebird XS" emblems on the front fender. The San Francisco/Sacramento zone had "Firebird SSA" emblems. These dropped to just the "Firebird" emblem later in this year."
I know you didn't ask about it, but here's another area-specific 'bird. It sort of explains why Pontiac did these special cars:
Page 91: The following is the verbiage that is under the attached pic: "The 1994 Firebird SCE (Southern California Edition) package. As in most years, Pontiac came out with low production specialty cars in certain markets to preview new possible options to the public. In this case, special SCE decals (pillar, behind door glass), white and silver wheels with special wheel caps (SCE on them), and another rear spoiler mounted onto the Firebird's integrated rear spoiler (look close, you see two). White seems to be the only color."
