4l60E No 3rd and 4th gear
Im new to this forum. I have used a lot of info on ???????????. Great guys over there. I recently posted a thread about my cars problem on their website, and after talking to a few members, one of em told me i should ask you guys for more advice. So here goes:
A couple of months ago my car stopped shifting into 3rd or 4th. Up until then i had never had ANY problems with the tranny. No slippage what so ever. I came home from work, still with no problem, stopped the motor there for aprox 10 mins and after i started it up again it wouldnt shift anymore. The tranny had quite a few miles on it already and everybody kept telling me it was the clutch pack, so i didnt think twice about ordering a new one from PerformaBuilt. I installed the new tranny, hoping my problem would be solved, but the new tranny did the EXACT same thing.
tranny shift fine first 2 gears but when it tries to shift into 3rd it just lets go and the engine revs freely. hooked up a snap on scanner and everything looks ok. The scanner indicates that the solenoids are switching, but the tranny doesnt shift.
So.. anybody got any suggestions? Thanks in advence
My car is a 94 LT1 with a 4L60E trans and it has a madtuner tune in it. Hope this helps

if you unhooked the harness and have third gear you have a goofy electrical problem in the car

Well if the original trans did it and the new trans does the same and when unplugging the harness makes it default to third, I would look that wiring in the harness first possibly the wire to the 2-3 solenoid shorted , or possibly a bad driver in the PCM would be a possibility.if either was the case you would get 1-2-2 then when the 1-2 solenoid came back on for 4th you would get 1st which would feel like neutral at the speed the shift would occur.I would tend to lean toward there being a short in the wiring to or the PCM for the wire to the 2-3 solenoid.

Yeah i unplugged the harness and it would run in 3rd. Yesterday i swapped the PCM for one that my buddy has for his 95 camaro, but the trans still wouldnt shift, so Im thinking that the PCM is good. But im really no expert in this. Which wire/wires should i check to see if theyre shorted?

Well electrical i always a possibility but with the miles and syptoms you give I would bet you need a trans. No 2-3 and a slipping 2-3 are very different syptoms. Sorry

I knew it was my tranny, cause I knew sooner or later it was going to go. The trans fluid was alittle low at the time, due to the trans pan gasket leaking. So I thought it was it running on low fluid, so I did a trans filter and gasket swap. The oil looked good and didnt smell burnt, very minor shavings (no too much on the magnet either) I believe its suppose to have some form normal teat and weat, so nothing major. So filled it up with oil and a bottle of lucas trans fluid (stops slip). And it did the samething.
The car has 114,XXX miles, I bought it with 106,XXX. Not sure if it was rebuilt before, ever since I bought the car, if your sitting in the passenger side while the car is accelerating you could feel something spining/vibrating on the floor panel, I dont no to much about transmissions, but I thought maybe it was the torque converter. Not sure what the symptoms of a slipping tq are though.
I have just thought it was the trans being bad and needing a rebuild, but shoot if this electrical thing might be an issue, Id rather check it out first.

gnerally yes though there are a couple other scenarios that can happen too , for instance with a stuck vb or solenoid you could get a 1-2-2-1 shift which could give the appearance of a neutral since the speed at which the shift would be attempted to 4th would be so high that the engine would esentially free rev.Another would e if the sunshell was bad you would get a 1-3 shift no second and a free rev where 4th should be but you would also not have reverse.

Don't over think it. Look at it this way, you are spraying N2O, it is running under high loads at high RPM's frequently. It is symptomatic. The 3/4 clutches are slipping plain and simple. It is time to upgrade to a transmission that will suit the needs of the current demands you are placing on it!
Once you do that, you will have lot's of fun with the car!
Let me know if I can help you with your decision.

My car will do same thing. Only have 800 miles on built 406le trans. No converter lock up either. Worked fine then just won't shift 3-4 after 2nd gear goes to neutral. Unhook the harnes at trans?

yes by unhooking the harness at the trans it forces the tranny manually to go into 3rd gear if it starts in 3rd then the tranny has third gear if it starts in first then the tranny has an internal problem just a little backyard quik test
