Is mileage stored in the PCM or gauge cluster?
Does the 4th Gen gauge cluster have it's own memory and store mileage, or is mileage stored within the PCM?

To prevent tampering and to allow replacement of instrument cluster, PCM or BCM, mileage is probably stored in two or three locations. I am not certain about the details but mileage is definitely preserved when the PCM is swapped.

So then I would imagine if you were to retain the original PCM, but swap clusters, the PCM would keep the actual car's orginal mileage and not that stored on the new cluster? Seem right?

I am selling a cluster and just wanted to know if the mileage on the car it came from was relevant.

From what I recall, the ECM will keep the gauge cluster updated on the mileage. When the engine is shut off, the gauge cluster keeps that last mileage stored in memory. So when you swap a cluster from vehicle to vehicle it just accumulates mileage based on the last stored mileage counts given to it. You can have the gauge cluster reset to a different mileage reading (currently some dealers will only do this for new gauge clsuter ONLY!) or down to zero. Then it will start counting up again when it gets a proper signal from any ECM. The ECM does have a mileage counter that cannot be accessed, much like the runtime.

There is a shop called specmo that can reprogram the milage on a cluster for you. You have to sign a waiver or something but they will do it. There is one in flint, and I think one closer to you as well but I can't think of where right now.

I know it stores mileage in the cluster, but im sure it stores it somewhere else so that you dont buy a car showing 10,000 miles when it realls has 189,000.Surely it is, im just not sure where.

Does anybody know if the mileage is on a chip in the cluster or in the lcd on a 97 firebird, I have a replacement cluster with 184,000 miles but my car only has 72,000 miles, I want to take the cluster apart and change the part that has the mileage over to the new cluster .

I FOUND A NEW cluster circuit board for the "97 firebird only" on ebay and it looks like there is a chip that can possibly be pulled, it may be soldered in.... I'm taking mine apart to find out since nobody seems to know, I'll post what I find out
