Simple Green spray and a garden hose.
Personally, I don't use high pressure water. Just right out of the hose seems to work fine.

I bought some CD2 stuff from auto zone, that works really nice for deatailing your engine bay and makes your manifold very shiny.

I just washed the front of the engine today. I rinsed with a garden hoes which gets off a ton of stuff. Then I sprayed on Simple Green and let it sit for a couple minutes, and rinsed off. A scrub brush could help even more, it looks very good now. BUT.... the water got into one of the idler pullies and is making a HORRID squealing noise, look in the External Engine forum for more info.
