Default How do I Clean a dirty LS1 block and valve covers?

I am in the process of cleaning my engine, its dirty from 12 years on the road. I took a little bit of gas on a tooth brush and scrubbed it, it helped a little. I am trying to make it look new again. I have already polished the accumulator and a/c lines as well. I lightly sanded the tb and mass to get the top coat of paint off, and then I polished them. What can I use to clean it up, besides engine cleaner?

Scotch brite + 50/50 simple green works pretty well. Just make sure to rinse it off well because continued exposure to simple green can damage aluminum.
