there are some 'bird tails that are a darker shade of red than the others (think burgundy vs red, then take away some contrast)

no clue if its a year split or not. Wouldnt effect the actual housing color.

Does it look like the lens was pulled off and the back part painted?

Its from water. The water creates mold or something and damages the lens.

Moisture gets in the lenses and causes the reflective surface on the inside to corrode and makes the lens look darker. Not much you can do about it. It is the bane of the LS1 tails, like the delamination is with the LT1 tails.

I actually had the same problem with my car. However, at first, I assumed it was the bulb housings or something since they were very corroded. I ended up replacing all of the housings with new ones from AutoZone and it ended up working perfectly afterward. More than likely, it is from the water damaged lens, though. Just sharing what fixed mine haha.

if you're very careful you can separate it by putting it in the oven or using a heat gun, spraying the inside with silver/chrome spray paint, and resealing it with RTV silicon. worked decently for mine.
