Default Strange idea for a hood - need help

I have a 1999 Z28 with an aftermarket SS hood that I've come to dislike. I plan on buying an SLP Ultra-Z hood as the intake would match perfectly to my Volant cold air kit. Here is the dilemma. All that open space in inclement weather could play merry hell in my engine. I also don't want to have to keep track of a form-fitting cover that could be lost or stolen. My solution is this. I want to make a solenoid-actuated armature and cover to fit on a hinge inside the hood. It will switch it from open to closed via a switch on the dash (or wherever I decide to put it). I know it's an odd mod, but any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I thought about doing something similar too, but the shark is about to cease being my daily driver and will only see clear, sunny days. But keep trying, as you may be able to sell the idea, or sell the unit itself, if it is good enough.

Idea would work if you could get the door to swing far enough but biggest problem is finding a 12 volt solenoid with a throw long enough to do the job.

Actually, that's not a concern. I could make something with a horizontal mount and a Z-shaped armature with an off center pivot point. I think any standard continuous solenoid could do the job (intermittents are not what I'm looking for, and their duty cycles are too quick). I just don't know how in the world I'm going to mount the thing!!!

You know, there is a distinct advantage to working at a college. I spoke with a professor of electromechanical engineering, and my hood idea is going to be next semester's project. It seems they are covering a unit on miniaturized servo control motors. Through the use of temperature, humidity, ambient moisture (I didn't know it was different than humidity), speed, and oxygen sensors, the hood will have a computer controlled louver system that will open and close automatically. I got the prof to agree to let me document the process, and get a parts list. The only change he made is the hood will be a VFN stingray. I can't WAIT to see the finished project!

Old school musclecar hood flaps were controlled by vacuum. Some cars scoops opened with rpm, some when the engine warmed, and some manually... but they were all vacuum controlled flaps.

I wouldnt mind having one that didnt depend on so many variables. Id like one that opened at the same rate you would open up the throttle body, or one that opened at 75% or WOT.

Hey... the class is doing it for free, and they're also buying the hood. I'll let them do it any way they want.
