Default Installing hood strut question...

I am finally getting around to putting on new hood struts for my car. Now - just out of pure "this looks normal" i installed them "upside down" compared to how everyone else has them...meaning instead of the extension (thinner) piece on the bottom - i installed it so the thicker tube was at the bottom and the extension (thinner) piece was attached to the hood....does this matter?

I can't see why it would.
Btw, where did you get those. I've been looking and haven't found any that would work without fab'ing up an extra piece to make it work.

Idk why it would make a difference...I'm pretty sure thats how I mounted mine. It seems like it would be stronger/less flimsy that way...

Whats different about the ones pictured compared to any other hood strut? What would need to be fabbed?

Where did I get what, the struts? GM replacement parts - but i should have looked on ebay - much cheaper - but they are a direct SLP replacement. I just don't get the "stock" way of mounting them...they look wrong.

Here is an explanation of why it is recommended that they be mounted with the shaft (thinner part) pointing down...

"Shaft down" is the preferred orientation for mounting a Gas Spring. An optimum design would permit the spring to be oriented shaft down through its entire actuation. There are several reasons for this:

In order to achieve the damping or "cushion" at the end of the Gas Spring's stroke, the piston assembly inside of the Gas Spring must travel through oil at the end of the stroke. "Shaft down" orientation ensures that the oil is in the proper location for damping to occur.

"Shaft down" orientation ensures that the shaft and sealing components are lubricated with every stroke of the Gas Spring. This reduces seal wear and helps to inhibit corrosion.

Depending on the application, "shaft down" orientation may reduce the rate of gas permeation through the seal, which increases the useable life of the Gas Spring.

Hope this helps..

Like I said - the reason I mounted them this way was because I couldn't remember how they were supposed to go...the way i installed them is the way that made the most visual sense to me. For whatever reason - it just looks normal this way - the other way looks like they're upside down.

Mine went so I eliminated one of them, polished the other and drilled a hole in it to use a retaining pin to hold the hood up.

I'm tired of polished stuff - too much of a pain in the *** to keep shiny. I have a BMR polished radiator shroud that hasnt looked the same since i took it out of the box.

No polish will get the swirls and haze out of it. Sucks.
