Question Satin Black in the back

I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of Satin Black painted tail panels? I'm thinking about having my tail panel painted on my Z, but didn't want flat black. I've got a white 99 Z28.

Any pics out there?

Mine is satin.

Man I do like the satin look...

How hard would it be to paint that piece myself? I think the most time consuming would be taking the old white paint off, sanding etc. Especially in the letters...

You dont need to sand it off completely, just get the clearcoat off. Takes an hour of sanding to do a good job. Then prime it, and paint it. I did mine from start to finish in 3 hours including post-paint wet-sand and buff with a rattlecan. Still needs one more good wetsand, but here's a pic. Dont mind the dirty rear bumper or red paint, the car's been sitting for over a month

It's pretty easy to do.. I just used 400 grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface. Washed it with soapy water and then wiped it down with rubbing alcohol. After that I applied a coat of automotive primer, and then a coat of primer sealer. After that dried, I put 3 coats of Rustoleum Satin Black paint. I allowed it to dry overnight before handling it.

That's not too bad. Do you know what paint # you used on your tail panel? Did you use just a regular aerisol satin black?

Thanks..

Aeresol paint is all that I used. Also, you don't have to remove all of the clearcoat if you're going to prime it. You just need to provide a rough surface for the paint to adhere to. The primer filled in the little grooves left from the sand paper, but the grooves shouldn't be major since you're using a pretty light sandpaper..

haha.. yeah if I had 30g's just laying around I'd find me one. So till that day happens I'll settle with being a "poser"

I agree some cars it doesn't look good. I like it on a white and I like it on DietCokes and Z28Venoms dark maroon base. But there are some colors that it just doesn't go with.

Yeah the only thing I worry about is screwing it up somehow.. bad application where the paint won't stick etc. I need connections at a paint shop

$30? That's not bad.. I might have to shop around then and see what a few of the reputable body shops in the area would charge. I was thinking it'd be around $200.

I know that I could have easily paid someone a few bucks to do it, but it was a fun project to try on my own. Now when people say " Who did that" its pretty fun to say that I did it on my own..
