I had the Autometer triple guage pillar. It was just a cover for the entire stock pillar. You have to drill a few holes and use the include plastic screws to hold the two pillars together.

wonder if you could use double sided tape, since thats not really going to hurt the pillar underneath...just to beable to keep it stock?

I think that total was around $250 for everything including shipping to Hawaii at the time.
I had Phantom water and oil temp guages. I also ran the Cobalt C-2 a/f guage. I purchased everything from Jegs.

Here is a shot of mt setup, runing fuel prs, boos/vac, and wide band o2. With a Raptor shift light installed in the defroster vent.
Bought my pod from Jegs about 65.00.

I was able to route my wires and boost line just by making a small notch at the bottom of the orignal cover just were it meets the dash. So if I remove my pod the dash mat will cover the notch. And as for the 4 holes for the plastic rivets they can be reinstalled in the cover as well and that is all that would tell that there was ever a pod installed.
I to was worried about cutting my orginal cover up as well so I bought a used set off of e-bay, just incase things dont work out.

Pics in sig, after taking it on and off a few times I just went to rivets cuz the little christmas tree fastners wore out a bit, just hit them with a little interior paint like the pod. Dont worry about drilling holes, its not like your ever going to take it off once you spend the money and go through all the bull to get it in. Besides a new a plr from the dealer or junkyard or one of the 10pt cage guys wont cost much. Also drilling a hole in the fire wall and installing a grommet in it was a piece of cake. Just my $.02

If you have a black interior I guess it would be ok to leave it but if you paint it with black interior paint then the gloss level will match all the other polypro plastic in the interior. No big deal really, some people do it and some dont. I had to do mine because I have dark grey interior although I havent touched up my rivets yet. Most important thing is make sure all the connections are good and that the gages work before you install the pod to the a plr. Its a bitch to pull those fastners out without messing them up. They get wore out after a few removals.
