Converting power antenna to shorty antenna
Is this an easy task?
I'm thinking of getting one of these for my Trans Am.

The power antenna motor on my car has crapped out and I want to replace with a shorty. I need to know if these will mount straight up, or if i have to buy extra parts.

I made my antenna shorter but I didnt have a power antenna to begin with. I pulled the black ball off the tip with pliers, then cut the antenna to the desired length and put the ball back on. It took about 10 minutes and looks a lot better

I would guess that you would need a fixed mast antenna base from a Camaro to start...you need the base to screw the shortie into...I'm showing the following part numbers in my manual (double check through dealer):
10298264 - 98-02 RDO ANT Bezel, low-gloss
10425534 - 98-02 BRACKET, RDO ANT, fixed-mast
12186133 - 98-02 CABLE, RDO ANT, fixed-mast (F87 coupe)

Come on man, you gotta do it all ghetto style. Save your money for go fast mods. On my old Regal, the motor took a dump with the antenna stuck down. Just take that thing apart and pull the antenna up out of its hole. Then clip the wire for the motor and you're good to go.

I'll disable it for now until i figure out what to do with it.

On my Regal, I figured that out by looking at the back of the head unit.
EDIT: Is there a seperate fuse for the power antenna motor you could pull? Hopefully you'll still get a signal and disable the motor.

I put a power antenna (one from a bird) on my '02 Camaro - you'll need the mast (from that site) and the base thingy (not sure how to describe it). It has the number 10425534 stamped on it (see pics here: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gtg697y/temp/antenna/ ).
I'd imagine those two parts are the only one's you'd need.
Pretty simple to replace (easier than putting a power antenna into a non-power car). All you'd have to do is take off the cover where the spare is, take out spare to get to everything, locate the power antenna base (black thing that's about 5"x3"x10" if memory serves correctly with a tube and wires coming out of it). Unplug the wires from it, disconnect the tube (or cut), unscrew it from the quarterpanel, pull it out of the car. To put camaro base in, insert camaro base where power base was (might help to plug the thick black [signal] wire into the base first - I remeber it was hard to get to otherwise), put that nut back on to bolt it back. You might want to do something about the tube that should be running out the bottom of your car (was on the power antenna to drain water that got into the unit). I had a website that had a writeup to install the power antenna - if I can find it again, I'll post it up so you can see what I'm talking about.
edit: found the site - http://www.blackcamaro.com/antenna.htm

The radio signal goes through a separate wire, so unpluging that group of three smaller wires won't cut the signal.
