Default Califorina Car duster....Any way to clean and treat them

What is the best way to clean the "California Car duster" for those that use or have them.. Or is it just best to buy a new one?

That is what my Meguiar's one says as well. However, I have shaken and quickly twisted it around with my wrist and it lets loose the dirt/dust. However little pieces of the fibers go with it. I don't really like it all that much because the strands are coated with wax and once I go across a panel, it leaves dozens of little wax trails and small bits of the fibers - kinda rendering it useless.

I heard that you're supposed to keep them wrapped in newspaper when not in use. Is this true and why?

When you first buy them lay them on newspaper for a couple of days. That removes the excess wax in the duster. You probably will get little wax trails the first few times you use it but they will stop. After that they work great.

Hmmm I've never heard about this newspaper business. I've always had it holstered into the heavy plastic carry bag it came in.

I used mine a few times and it worked great. Then I went to use it this season and it started leaving wax streaks on my car. I have had it holstered whenever not in use so I dunno why now it is doing this. I stopped using mine due to the wax streaks it was leaving.

Mine started leaving wax on the paint too. Just picked up a new one this year. I think they need to be replaced every now and then.

I've used the same one for several years with great results. The comment about it working better the dirtier it gets is very true. The key to preventing the wax streaks is to not dust the car when it's in the sun, recently been in the sun, or right after being driven.

I have had a few dusters over the years. I've sort of made it an unofficial habit to replace it every five years or so.

Do you just use this duster when the car's clean, but its been sitting out in the day and has a coat of dust? and it doesn't scratch the paint at all?

So then for the duster to work properly, I'll just have to stop shaking it off? I guess that will stop some of the streaking too.

I have one and I really love it. It works perfectly in this dusty *** state. Fortunately I have a garage so my car isnt scorching hot when I dust it off. That is probably why some of you are getting wax streaks. I think even in the instructions it tells you not to dust it in direct sunlight, but Im not sure. Ive had it for about a year and yes its dirty as hell, but it keeps doing its job like a champ, no scratches or streaks here.

it really does work better when it's dirtier, but there is a point where it would have to be cleaned i suppose

Definatally shake it after and during use to get the nasty stuff you just got off of your car off of your duster. We use ours at car shows and such. Only use it when your car is JUST dusty and NOT dirty!!

I washed mine in our washing machine and put it back on and it worked better than before. I believe it actually says you can machine wash it on the instructions.

Sweet, I was just thinking about putting mine in the wash but I didnt know if it would still work afterwards. I figured it would take whatever makes the dust stick out of it.

I never realized your not supposed to use it in the sun, most the time my car has been sitting outside before dusting, and I constantly have the streak problem, then I have to go over almost the whole car with quick detail to remove all the marks, basically it makes 2 times the work. Next time Ill try it before taking it out in the sun

What did you use in the wash for detergent?
