Default Chrome Wheel Cleaner = Waste of Money?

Hey guys, I was in the auto store buying some beautifying supplies for the Trans Am. I've always passed up on the chrome wheel cleaners because I just had stock rims. Now that I got a set of Chromed TTM's, are these worth buying? Nevertheless, I passed up on them again and just ended up cleaning the wheels with a microfiber towel soaked in water with great results.

Am I missing something? Are chrome wheel cleaners just another "propoganda" form of fruity scented water in a eye-capturing packaged bottle?

Thanx

If you keep your wheels fairly clean then there is no need for a chrome wheel cleaner. If you somewhat neglect them, then you may want to use the cleaner to help get rid of any built up particles.

If you wax your chrome rims, they are very easy to keep clean and you won't need chrome cleaner.

I just use car wash soap on mine. I wash them the same as I do my car... sheepskin mit.

Zaino makes 'em look like new! Takes about 5 minutes per wheel.

P.S. .... most wax products don't really last very long on wheels because of the combination of heat and frequent washing. So I coat with Zaino about every 2 months.

You may eventually experience some oxidation that will not be able to clean with water or paint cleaner. This is where chrome cleaners and polishes come in. Especially if you have chromed aluminum, polished aluminum and clearcoated polished wheels.

A good chrome polish or cleaner is an essential product IMO. Your next step is finding an ideal product for your wheels.

Wenol "Blue" Auto and Motorcycle polish is great on chrome. Use it once every month or two and all you'll need to do is wash in between.

I use the Mothers chrome polish on my SLP ZR1's and you'd be AMAZED at how much of a difference it does make! I thought it was BS and never used it for the first 3 years or so I had my car. I bought a power ball and decided to give the chrome polish a shot since it was cheap at a show. I used it and WOW! I didn't think chrome could get shiner but it did. I just use Eagle One's All Wheel cleaner when I wash the car, nothing specific for chrome wheels.

When I had chrome wheels on my Tahoe it really worked well to get the brake dust off the wheels. Just want to make sure you dont let it sit on there for too long otherwise the brake dust foam would leave a streak at the bottom of the wheel where it ran off.

But yea, the chrome wheel cleaners do make them shine like new.

I use mothers chrome polish from time to time, but the best thing I've found for them is to go over them with a clay bar. Brand spankin new.

For those of you with OEM polished wheels....this is a waste of time because your wheels are clearcoated. If you actually have a chrome wheel that isn't clearcoated this will work great.

I use eagle one chrome cleaner. Works great, especially if you're not the type to get around to cleaning them often. But you're look damn clean, woo look at that shine.
