Default How long will a tranny swap take in my garage???

It looks as if my 4L60e is toast. I'm thinking of buying another 4L60e and swapping it out myself. I have a two stall garage, jacks, jack stands and the basic tools.

How many hours can I expect to spend on this swap? I am trying to decide whether I want to sell my Z28 with the bad tranny or fix it and keep it. I don't have a ton of free time so I want to know how long it might take me. I am guessing 20 hours or so.

BTW I most likely will be doing the entire job myself. Thanks.

first time on jackstands it took me about 10 hrs total by myself. the next time it took 4 hrs total. (getting the old one out and the new one in). so its not that bad of a job. you will feel like you ran a marathon after you finish you can easily get it done on a weekend

Are you just swapping in a built 4l60e or a different auto? NVM, just saw your thinking about a new one.

If so it should take around 8 hours for the whole thing.

took ten hours for me and hilton to do it and that was with goofing off drinking taking breaks etc etc. plus we were both rookies on pulling an auto.

My dad and I had it out in 3 hrs. Getting it jacked high enough was the issue. Stand up, spread your feet apart 2.5 feet. From your feet to your waist is how big my new jack stands are. LOL.

An extra set of hands, a tranny jack cradle for your floor jack, 2 floor jacks, four monster jack stands, air gun, big extensions, and lots of pieces of wood for extra height will be your friend.

a friend and i had my trans down in an hour and 10 min. changed the stall and put the new one in about 2 hours. but we are both experienced and have both done it multiple times. also helps out greatly w/the right tools for the job! i would not sell your car as you will see its not that bad of a job. keep us posted and take pictures of the swap.

Yeah, when I replaced mine it took me an hour to pry off the bellhousing, with a crowbar, little by little and shaking it side to side. It was a bitch. I did mine by myself in a weekend with lots of breaks. Get the car up high, have some long extension bars for the top bolts of the bellhousing and be safe. It will really help if you can get a transmission jack also.

And have a lot of extensions 1' to 2' long and a swivel to reach the bell housing bolt.
