4l80e HELP!!!
So I got a smoking deal from the local scrap yard. I picked up a 2 wheel drive 92' 4l80e and a 99' 4 wheel 4l80e for 50.00 each. I also have a 05' 4 wheel drive 4l80e, So which one do I use for my lq9 camaro build?
I know the 4 wheel units will have to be changed to the 2 wheel setup. But if the later years are better will the parts from the 92' work?
later i will be puttting a lq4 and the 4 wheel 4l80e in my 88 k5 blazer.
Thanks for any input

All three of those years have some changes in the units hydraulics's. The 92 unit you can use the direct drum, forward drum and the od planet/overrun drum assembly in either of the later units. I would probably use either the 99 or 05 unit for what you are doing because the bell will match the engine using the most amount of bolts. The later units the planets had been upgraded and also the aluminum pistons in the forward and direct drums had been changed to a steel bonded piston. The 05 unit there had been some changes to the case so be careful if you swap pumps on this one. I have talked to guys that actually like the early units better and also viseversa!

One thing to consider is the location of the cooler fittings, having both in front can make the install easier depending on how much you are willing to alter the tunnel, but I think you end up needing a different converter setup to run the older style case with an LS engine.

Yes you can use the tail off the earlier unit. There is a freeze plug in the back of the case on the 4x4 units. You will need to remove this and replace with an orificed cup plug seal that usually comes in the kits. When you remove the tail from the early unit you will see what I'm taking about here. The output shaft will need to be changed however there is a difference in the shafts. The early shaft has a lube hole in it while the late shaft does not. So you will have to get one of these to do the swap. Seeing as you will be doing all of this I recommend that you get an overhaul kit and this will give you all the gaskets and seals to do the job. I hope this helps. Vince

my guess would be to use the 99 unit, convert it to 2WD-it has updates, and the 04-up had some changes, and there are more parts avail for the 99 units
i have tried to find what the changes are on 04-up units as far as swapping parts, but not much info out there yet
i have an 04 unit i need a VB for(tried to make it work with the HD-3 kit)
almost as cheap to buy a whole core trans as just the VB
