Question Standing mile 200mph - for autos too?

After collecting hundreds of drag strip slips over the years not only am I looking for single digits in the 1/4m real soon but I have been recently fascinated by the "standing mile" videos Ive been checking out and seeing here on tech.

From what Ive seen it seems this avenue of racing is reserved for the manual trans guys. Im curious if theres a place in it for us auto guys? I mean... with enough power and right gearing it could be possible, right?

Ive spent a lot of money on my recent 4L80e, swapped from a t56, along with the billet Circle D converter, Dennys DS, Mark Williams billet yoke, Moser housing/Strange nodular center 9" with all the bells and whistles.. etc.

Any thoughts on this? I havent done any gearing math on this yet but just curious what any of you have to say about it.

The mile is the reason I got my new converter from circle d....hit 4th, lock up the converter and keep on going. Just have to have the right gearing and rpm...I'm stuck at 193 unless I rev it any higher

Thats what I was thinking.. a new converter... new center with proper gearing for the 9"...

What kind of converter did you go with? Stall wise.. specs?

What kind of power are you making for 193?

Thanks.

I havent hit 193 yet lol, that just where my gearing and rpm would stop me at...its just capable of that with more power, well, in the mile anyway

Like said before i went with circle d and its like a 3000-3200 stall...but even if it was looser that is what the tripple disc lockup is for.

Flaco hit 199mph in a full size truck at the mile with a 4L80E.

There is plenty of autos there. Its just gonna take a lot more hp to go 200 than a manual car

I am still scratching my head as to why guys like the LMR crew use a manual. I would think the front part of the mile is like the front part of the 1/4 mile... extremely important. Putting the power down as quickly as possible should be priority. I've never attempted to go that fast so I'm admittedly ignorant on what works best.

An ice-water cooled trans cooler would be needed.. haha

I can't speak for LMR but I would think the 6sp manual with the wide ratios compared to a auto might be a reason.

Did flaco use 4th to hit that mph, or just 3rd and has some really high rear gears? The lowest gear i can get for my car is 3.54 so im having to use 4th

I only speak for my application , but for me the 1/4 mile was pretty useless. My car started really pulling at about 3/8 mile or so and at the 3/4 mile I was shifting to 5th.I trapped 177.3 pulling through the mile mark. My shift light is set at 6900 and before it would light up the rev limiter would kick around 7200. Its difficult to try and explain but somewhere at the 1/2 mile area you can feel the whole attitude of the car change.Weight is really not the big deal as with 1/4 mile racing. We figured that with the rear hp and design of the car with a slight headwind it would do 176. We werent far off. My car weighed in at 3040 lbs but full bodied others making same power produced similar results.

In all reality I would need another 30+ hp to get a clean 180. Just to put it into perspective I make a clean 500 and change at the rear.

Well with 3.08 gears 4l80e can hit 200 on the top end of 4th with 26.8 dia tires. That's what I'm setting my car up for gearing wise

He locked it up in 3rd about the 1/4mile mark, spun it way up and never used 4th. Not sure what rpm, I want to say around 8k.

its all about how well you match your gears/stall/tranny etc. auto can do it just as much as a manual can. I think another big point is at xxxMPH you will need xxHP to continue to pull in high gears. theres a mathematical calculation to figure out how much more power you need to go xxMPH faster taking into account drag gearing blah blah blah but I dont know what it is nor do you want me to do math
