Default Started my 4l80e Rebuild 2 night! 6/10/2011

So i decided to start yanking this thing apart, 1992 model year, and never been rebuilt (supposedly), with 82,000 miles on it.

I was their to see my clutches in 4l60 come out, and these look almost like the brand new ones that i have in my rebuild kit! THis thing doesnt look abused or anything as far as i can tell.

Anyhow, i got as far as completely disassembling the trans and replacing some seals.

Im waiting on my Jake's Performance Valve Body Calibration and i forgot to order a new front band, What band are people using?

I replaced the re band with a high energy something or other, lol, The clutch packs are all "high energy" borg warner clutches. I will be attempting to "dual feed the directs" by doing a couple things i was told to do, ill have to do some reading in this manual to figure out what parts are what.

Anyway, thought id share a couple pics of where im at now. Ive been taking pics as i remove things, and took a bunch of pics of the vavle body with the check ***** in their so i dont forget where they go. lol

Any how, hope to have it together by the end of next week so that i can measure for the Drive shaft and get it made, Im trying like hell to make it to the track for the first time in my life on the 15th of july we shall see!

Anyway here are a few pics

Ive been using this link, this guy took a million pics! You have to open all the links in his first post, but he did a great job!

Need to order a front band, i forgot that one, trying to figure out if people are using the HD "WIDE" band or not. its 1.25" wide vs. the stock 1" wide, seems like a good idea to me, more surface area FTW!??

EDIT: Also wanted to add, i have not used one "SPECIAL" tool at all, just snap ring plyers, and was able to have this apart in about an hour and half. I did get hung up on the cooler fitting, which your rebuild kit will come with, as i did not have the proper 12 point socket, so after messing with it and stripping, i tapped a 10mm socket onto it with a hammer and impacted it out. The new bolt is a torx bit.

The internal wiring on the older units is different, as is the external plug (and the Speartech conversion harness uses the newer style plug). Not sure if it's different for GTO's, but that's what I had to do for my Fbody 4L80e build.

Don't get to hung up on the band. It only slow you down in manual second. Keep the transmission from overrunning. Does not do any shifting. Unless you are a hard core 4X4 just use the stock band and go on.

The older style plug was only used in 91 and 92. They were more prone to leak fluid also.

GM makes a conversion kit-or post a pic of your plug sticking out of the trans and see if it has been converted

I will do that this evening, thanks! I started getting into it more last night, i tell you what, that jig that compresses the springs deals would be very nice right about now, lol.

Getting it apart wasnt all that bad, its getting back together that is a terrible pain in the ***!

Dunno if this will help you out or not.. But here's a list of GM 4l80 harness #'s

92-93'= 24200161

94-95'= 24241216

96-03'= 24241218

04-07'= 24229664

Not sure what year you need to use, maybe someone here will know.. Good luck on the build.

How much do you estimate that you will have in it?

With the driveshaft and converter, probably about 1700 bucks

Got the trans for 150 and the rebuild parts for about 250.

I listed my current stall for sale, im hoping to make back around 60% of this cost out of selling my other two transmissions and stall.

Is this just a stock type rebuild? No upgraded valvebody, sprag, input and/or output shafts?

I really want to build a built 4l80e that will take anything that I throw at it.

Jakes Valvebody calibration and HD frictions and another little trick, but no, no Billet parts.

Im at a cross roads at the moment, not having any luck with the drums, so im going to drop them off at a friends house with the stupid tool to compress the springs and know how to get that stupid piston back in their with splitting the new seals. I tried for about an hour to get it in their straight and kept going to one side or the other, split two brand new seals. Just a PITA

My trans is a 1992 and my computer is a 2002, so i should use the 96-03' correct? it looks pretty obvious, but wanna make sure i use the right one

Any [late]93-04 harness should be fine.
