Default Need opinions on what to do (TH400 or built 4L60E

I have a 98 Z28 with bolt ons. Car weights around 2900lbs. I have a stock 4l60e in it right now. I have lost 3rd and 4th gear. I am making it a weekend warrior and drag car (not my dd). It is sitting right now with a bad trans and I want to get it running again.

I have done alot of research on a th400 and a built 4l60e. I dont know what to do. How well will a built 4l60e hold up? I see some 9-10 second f bodys with built 4l60e trannys.

I am really confused about this th400 swap. I just cant find a straight answer about anything. I would like to do the th400 swap but, it seems like everyone has done them differently. The tuning is another weird subject. How hard is it going to be to get it tuned right?

Can a built 4l60e be just as strong as a th400?

I know with a built 4l60e i can just get it built and toss it right back in there and get a tune and be done. With the th400 i need all these parts and dont know if they will work right, if i get a built 4l60e i know when its all back in there i can drive it i hope lol

Is this a drag / track car only? How much street driving do you do?

I don't plan on doing alot of street driving. Just want to trailer it to the track really.

I had the same delima when I blew my trans, but I went with a built 60e based my car seeing a lot of street time. If I were going to make it a weekend warrior, I would have went with a rmvb th400 with a brake, just my .02...

Same boat here. My 60e went out and im just going 400 instead of messing with rebuilding the 60.

So why not have the best of them both! Just but in my 4L80E, all the same parts as a 400 with electronic shift and overdrive. I had mine built by a local shop and it will hold my little 402 with an F1A. I it cost as much as a fully built 4L60 and is a tin stronger. The swap was easy but I used a TCi stand alone trans cont.

Do not do it three times like me. Build it to work with 200 extra HP.

Good Luck

unless you are making 850+hp theres no way in hell id run a th400 in it....... a well built th350 would be just fine...............i was going to switch to a th350 this year but i enjoy driving my car on the weekends..........i run a built 4l60e.......been in the car for 4 years now and i race it nearly every weekend and street drive it often..........in the right hands a well built 4l60e will last quite a while.......and its nice......out of all my race car friends when we cruise down the highway i can cruise the nicest with overdrive and a lockup converter, even though im the most radically built car out of all of them........

You are running just bolt ons and considering a TH400? I assume you have big plans for the motor in the future or else a TH400 is WAY overkill for a bolt on car......I'd stick with the 60E unless you are going forced induction or H/C down the road.
