Default fluid line fittings for 1993 4L80e, connecting to fluid cooler

I need to get the fittings for the fluid lines on my 1993 4L80e transmission.

I've seen THESE -6AN ones mentioned before, but it looks like the provisions for the cooling lines in my transmission are threaded, not retained by a clip.

Not only that, but my transmission cooler (B&M 70264) that I planned to mount "dope" style (horizontal between the air dam and bumper cover), but it has 3/8" barb fittings.

So first, I need to figure out what fittings specifically I need for my transmission, then I need to figure out how to connect them to my 3/8" barb fittings on the cooler.

I'm lost here and I just need to get these last details squared away and I can put my transmission back in.

If you see threads, then the stock fittings have been removed.

Are both cooler lines up front or do you have a 97+ case with one front and one rear?

I got that, but what I dont understand (maybe it just isnt possible) is how to get the -6an lune attached to a 3/8" barb on my cooler.

Use -6 push lock hose such as Fragola part #'s 800006 (black cloth braid covering), 860006 (blue rubber covering) or 870006 (black rubber covering).

You can put -6 AN pushlock hose ends on the transmission side. Fragola part #'s 200106 (straight), 204506 (45 degree) or 209006 (90 degree); all are offered in blue or black.

You can clamp those hoses directly over the 3/8" barb on your transmission cooler. If you want to make the connection at the cooler look nicer than a regular hose clamp, you can use Fragola EZ Clamp Hose Ends part #'s 280006 (red), 280206 (black), 280406 (clear) or 280106 (chrome). These are worm gear clamps contained in a body that looks similar to AN hose end fittings.

Other companies such as Earls or Aeroquip probably also offer similar hoses and fittings, but I don't have their part #'s handy.

Thanks, that helps ALOT!

Since my provisions on the transmission are threaded, I assume I need a threaded NPT end and not the clip lock style mentioned previously.

-6 to 1/4 straight pipe is a better option here. Use these so you do not break a case using the wrong thread pitch when installing fittings directly into the case. I have used the same ones you mentioned above in the past but these are a better option IMO.

If you have brass fittings in your case now I would either use what I mentioned above or there is one other option. You can get 991946ERL from Earl's. This fitting is a fuel fitting and its a -6 to 1/2-20 and it works great! HTH Vince

I ended up buying -6AN to 1/4" NPT fittings, then Fragola push lock 45* to -6AN fittings, and push lock lines to my trans cooler, and I'll just push the end of the hose over the 3/8" barb fitting with clamps as mentioned. Should work out pretty well!

EVO just make sure to use some liquid sealer like PFE paste or some anaerobic sealer on the threads of the fittings. Also do not go all gorilla when tightening these fittings in the case. Like I mentioned above the thread pitch is just a little different. Good luck with your project. Vince

Well I got the -6AN to 1/4" NPT fittings today and "test fit" one into my transmission. It required some "convincing" to get it to thread, had to use a wrench, couldn't hand tighten. I know you said the thread pitch is just a little different, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Use -6 push lock hose such as Fragola part #'s 800006 (black cloth braid covering), 860006 (blue rubber covering) or 870006 (black rubber covering).

You can put -6 AN pushlock hose ends on the transmission side. Fragola part #'s 200106 (straight), 204506 (45 degree) or 209006 (90 degree); all are offered in blue or black.
This may be a dumb question - but do I simply slide the rubber hose over the barb on the 45* fitting? It was very tight trying to push it on the fitting.

Here are the tricks to assembling push lock fittings easily:

1. Throw the fittings in the freezer for 10 - 15 minutes.
2. Heat the end of the hose with a heat gun, or dip in a pot of boiling water.
3. Apply a few drops of motor oil to the barb.
4. Push the barb into the hose in one continuous motion.
5. It can be helpful to put the fitting in a vise, or use an extra t-fitting as a handle for better leverage.

LOL...thanks, that does help. I wouldn't have expected to freeze the hose then heat it. I'll try that. I assume a hose clamp is still required to hold the hose onto the fitting? I hadn't used the "push lock" fittings and hoses before and for some reason expected the hose to have something that would slide over the 45 degree fitting and seal. Dumb, I know.

I would have to disagree with the pushlock recommendation. While it is a solid hose fastening system that I've used over the years I would not use it on a transmission.

The reason is that over time the hose can become weak and then it can and will fail at the exact and most inopportune time. Meaning, under high perssure and high temperature. Or in laymans terms when you are at wide open throttle and potentially a high mph as well. The transmission fluid will immediately go under the tires and cause a loss of traction.

I have personally witnessed more than a handful off race cars wreck severely over the years due to pushlock transmission cooler hose setups.

Do not go cheap. Do not take the easiest route so to speak. Always and forever consider safety first when modifying your car!

Well I used the Summit Racing 1/4" NPT to -6 AN adapters, and it looks like there is more thread on the male side of the fitting than there is on the female side of the transmission. I screwed them all the way in until they stopped threading (I'm assuming the "bottomed out" and sealed) but the nut didn't sit flush with the transmission, and I'm wondering if this will be a problem. Since space is a premium in the trans tunnel and they protude possibly further than necessary, I'm worried this could be a problem when I connect the -6 AN fittings on them (either 45*'s which I ordered, or maybe 90*'s if needed)

What about just using 90* -6 AN to 1/4" NPT fittings instead of using the straight fitting, then to a 45* or 90* AN fitting?

Yep, those brass fittings are meant for hard line, not NPT.
