4L80E Questions
I have my eye on an older model 4L80E, about a 96-98 model. What all has to be done to make this one work in a 2000 Trans-Am? I've been told that all I need is the internal harness inside the trans. Can anyone verify this please?

lots of good info in here

'93-up have updated harness. '91-92 don't unless they've been rebuilt.

They will all work. I like the older units: they are cheaper initially, use the same parts, most have the updated harness, and the cooler fittings are at the front of the tranny not at the front and rear which also means you don't need that extended cooler fitting to reach the rear bushing.

Yes a 95 will work. Any of them will work.
For the record OP, the older model 4L80Es are 91-96, 97 and up are late models.
There are several differences with the earlier and later model 4L80Es, but one that stands out the most that makes some people wary of the early models is the lack of a bellhousing bolt hole at the very top of the bellhousing (known as the 12 o' clock position)
They think that the 4L80E won't be able to bolt up in their car all the way or something is wrong with it. That fear is unfounded, it will work just fine.
Another thing, the old sticky that used to be up about the 4L60E swap to the 4L80E swap was incorrect regarding the strength of the transmissions. He said that he had heard the older 4L80E's weren't as strong as the 97+ ones, that is simply not true. In fact, they tend to have a stronger OD gear if anything.
Any other questions?

There are really a total of 3 different harnesses. 1991-1992 are the oldest style, and obsolete, leak, etc. Basically everyone retrofits these units with the newer style. Then comes the 1993-2003 harness. Most common. Then the latest is a 2004+, which the only difference is the force motor (for some 2004+ PCMs), but the plug on the outside of the harness is the same as the 1993-2003 units.

I just purchased Jake's transbrake. I'm currently getting everything in order to swap a 4L80e into my camaro. Here's my thread on that
https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...-begins-3.html
I wouldn't do a transbrake unless the car is gonna see a lot of time at the track. When my car's running right I like to hit the track twice a month or so, and it's a street/strip car that doesn't do any DD duty. Plus, I got the driveline to handle the shock of a transbrake (fabb'ed 9", PST driveshaft, Strange axles). And like White said, do some searching. There's a plethora of info on this site about the 4L80E. I've got a ton of threads on my bookmark from doing searching to do this swap.
