Default Adding heads/cam this spring.. When to add a stall converter?

My plan is to do heads and cam this spring. I know I will need a 3600 stall, but would it be OK to buy and install the converter now? I'm trying to spread out the money so I'm not dropping a ton of cash all at once. Would it be OK or would it be horrible to drive with a bolt-on car?

Dumb idea?

what brand 3600 and how will it be configured.
different brands,different street manners.
do a search for 3600 in this auto trans forum, there'll be various opinions.
I have a Yank SS3600,perfect street manners,no annoying high rpm for engagement in normal city street driving.
put a stall in and you might not even want to do heads and cam then.

^^^ +1. Total agreement that a Yank SS3600 will work well with bolt ons.
However, you likely will still want to do heads and cam.

to OP,your sig doesn't mention your rear gear ratio, tell us.
SS3600 with 3.73s'-extremely streetable
SS3600 with 3.23s'-very streetable
SS3600 with 2.73s'-streetable but rpms due to the 2.73s' can start to get annoying.

aftermarket additional trans fluid cooler also recommended.

Absolutely do the stall first, wait until the break in period is over before the heads/cam. My stall was hands down my favorite mod thus far.

Thanks for the input, guys!

This is the first automatic car I've owned, so this is all very new to me. I'm going with the TSP 228R cam, and I currently have 3.23 gears.

I didn't know stall converters had a break in period... I will have to research that.

I'm in the process of installing a few gauges, one of which is a transmission temp gauge. Once that is installed, the trans cooler is next.

As far as stalls, I was looking at the Yank SS3600, as it seems to be highly recommended around here. Will I need a tune after I have it installed?

Go with an SS4k. It will mate to that cam very nicely. Yes it will need a tune but shouldn't be an issue to drive around till you get it done.

I'm much more conservative with stall speeds than 01ssreda4 and some others here.
As FirstYrLS1Z pointed out, the rear end ratio is critical to how well you will like the stall. With your 3.23 I would go no higher than SS3600. (I found my SS3600 a bit annoying with a 3.42 rear, but now have 3.73 and it is fine on the street.)
Yes, you will need a tune, but the tune is NOT stall speed specific; it mostly disables some codes and de-sensitizes the misfire table, things which are needed for just about anything over a 2600 stall.

I'm stock,no bolt-ons,DD.
my sequence was
-OEM 1800 & OEM 3.23 for 4 years,24.5 freeway mpg
-TCI 2800 & OEM 3.23 in 2006,24.5 freeway mpg
-TCI 2800 & 4.56 in 2007,21.5 freeway mpg
-Yank 3600 & 4.56 in 2011,21.5 freeway mpg-a beast in 1st & 2nd
-Yank 3600 & OEM 3.23 in 2012,24.5 freeway mpg
Freeway mpg based on Ohio to Florida trips.

TCI2800 was loose, car would not move forward at idle. Yank SS3600 is tight, moves forward at idle, just like the OEM 1800 would/did. In normal driving,it acts like OEM 1800 except when you WANT it to act like a beast.

currently building a 3.73 rearend

I spoke to Lonnie at Texas Speed, and he recommended the 3600 stall for my needs. I'm building a street car, so she will probably never see a race track.

I'm planning on running 5.3 stg 2.5 heads / 228r cam / LS6 intake.

Thanks for all the advice!

I don't think my SS4k is bad on the street at all, with 3.23s. Yank stalls require you to drive for 150 miles of normal easy driving before you go WOT. Otherwise you could glaze the clutch material. No bueno. Also the longest 150 miles of my life haha
