Default weird problem during burn out

the other day i was doing a burnout before a race. i started in first then as the rpms got higher i put it into 2nd but the car didnt shift. so i put it up into 3rd and it shifted into 3rd fine then i shifted back down into 2nd and it went into 2nd fine..

why wouldnty it shift into 2nd from first initially ?? any thoughts?

There are just too many variables going on here to even venture a guess. Depending up the tire mph, engine rpm and throttle percentage during the burnout, this might be normal. Does it shift fine under other "normal" situations?

Stop shifting during burnouts Start in second, end in second.

Please explain why I shouldn't just leave it in D3 or D4.
(I don't know about about this and am eager to learn more.)

If you leave it in drive or overdrive it will "search" back and forth between 2nd to 3rd(keep switching back and forth)

Well putting the shifter in 2 makes the trans start in 2nd, and end in 2nd, meaning no shifting occurs during the burnout. Shifting during the burnout is hard on the trans, and give you a good chance to 1. hit the rev limiter and 2. have low wheel speed and not get your tires hot. Asking the trans to shift during a burnout just over-complicates things. You can only start in 1st or 2nd with a stock trans, and 1st gear doesn't have enough wheel speed to really get your tires spinning and it will try to push you. Here's an example of a 2nd gear only burnout: simple, quick, effective.

Also on a TH350 or TH400 a 1-2 shift during a burnout is absolutely murder on the intermediate sprags. Using one gear during a burnout also helps the consistency of the burnouts. That way if you are doing back to back runs testing things for improvement or bracket racing it takes the burnout out of the equasion to a point.

Am I mistaken? I thought with the shifter in D2 the trans still starts in 1st gear but won't shift past 2nd gear. (Assuming a stock valve body.)

Depends on the PCM. My 2000 stays in 2nd.

my 2000 always started in 2nd. my 99 will not start in second. i compared the files and the 2000 and presumably up years have tables for the d2 position to allow it to start in 2nd. nothing in the 99 file.
