Default what tranny to use?

gonna be going with an LS2 based motor and the goal is around 12-1300hp. alot of people bolt them up to a built 4L80e but then i heard from other people how much of a power hog they are and they add alot of drag to the drive train. i definitely want an overdrive because it will be seeing alot of street miles. what do you guys think a good tranny is for alot of power but also street driven?

are there differences in the older 4L80e's that bolted up to the old school style chevy motor and the 4L80e's that bolt up to the newer LSx motor? do those motors have the same bolt pattern for the trannys?

YES!
Either here or in another forum, someone with a dyno swapped from a 4L60E to a 4L80E. IIRC, he lost only 5HP on the wheels at about 500HP total. So 1%.
Obviously you cannot even consider a 4L60E, but this shows that a 4L80E does not lose much more power than a much small (and delicate) trans.

There are a bunch of threads on that very question, including this one:

i wouldnt even count that as a lost in HP. you can make 3 pulls with the same setup and have 3 diff numbers.
