Which 4L60E's work with LS1's?
I am doing a LS1/4L60E swap on my 74 Corvette. This is the first time I have done an LSx swap and I am in learning mode to say the least! I was able to trade the 350 small block and TH400 transmission that were in the Corvette for an LS1 from a 2000 Camaro. Now I need to find a compatible 4L60E transmission.
I have read that 4L60E's from a Camaro/Firebird/Corvette 1998 to 2001 will be a direct fit? I have also read about 4L60E's from trucks such as those there were attached to 5.3/6.0 engines have the same bell housing bolt pattern and can bolt up to the LS1 but have other differences and modifications needed to adapt one of those.
My question is aside from the model years/cars I listed above are there other 4L60E's that are a direct bolt up without having to modify the transmission or am I limited to those years?
Thanks!

In short any '98 to '06 4L60E from any LS engine (except Corvette) will work fine.
It needs to have a 300mm input shaft, which is indicated by a bolt hole in the 12 o'Clock position in the bell housing. 4L60E from V6 engines will not be a direct fit, nor anything earlier than '98.

In doing my research I understand there were some sensor changes to the transmissions after 2001 so I expect I will have to have a PCM of the same model year that can communicate with them?
Why wont a Corvette transmission work? I have read on other forums that many consider a Corvette servo along with adding another clutch disk to each pack as one of the best mods?
Thanks for responding to my request for help!

Corvette 4L60E transaxle has an abbreviated bell housing and has differential bolted directly in place of the extension housing (i.e. LS1 Corvette has transmission located at rear).
You will need a 1999-2002 512KB PCM or a 2003-2007 1MB PCM.
Camaro/Firebird and GTO 4L60E's had various factory upgrades, like the larger area Corvette 2nd servo.

Joecar forgot to mention the biggest problem with a C5 4L60E - it has the older style 298mm input shaft (to save space) and therefore will not bolt directly to an LS engine.
All 300mm '98 through '06 4L60E and 4L65E have the same sensors and are physically and electrically identical, and therefore interchangeable. Some '06 and most '07 also have an Input Speed Sensor (ISS), but since older PCM ignore that sensor, those will even work. However, around 2008 and most 2009 do a major sensor/solenoid change which will not work with any PCM before those years.
The "Corvette servo" is a $15 part that can be retrofitted to any trans that doesn't already have it. As Joecar mentioned, most performance cars came with that part in their trans.
The Transgo HD2 or Sonnax "Performance Pack" shift kits are excellent upgrades to the 4L60E. They do require a few hours careful work with the valve body. Alternatively, I suggest install the Sonnax 4L60-LB1 boost valve, which is $25 and takes 3 minutes to install if you have snap ring pliers.
