Default Trans coming out to replace flex plate, is TC worth the swap now?

The car is stock, but have intensions of performance mods to get her back on the road..

Since I need to lower/remove the transmission partially, would swapping the TC now for something in the 3000 range be worth it on a stock motor?

Is that to high?

I was reading that those that went with the 3000+ range wanted the 4000 + range as soon as they tested it out..

We will eventually change out the rear gear, but right now just trying to get it back on the road and doing anything I can while I have the motor and trans apart.

I guess it depends ... what's your rear gear? I have a stock LS1 as well with a 2.73 rear. I tried a 3200 and hated it. I dropped down to a 2500 and absolutely love it.

I had 3.23 gears and had a TCI 3500 and loved it. This was in a daily driver too.

Everything on the car is stock so not sure what the rear gear is, isn't there a way to check based on the VIN or other codes on the car somewhere with out having to open it up or do the rotation of the tires to find out?

I would imagine its same as TA Freak a 2.73.. but if we are going to upgrade the gear later, would installing it now be worth it so we don't have to revisit this undertaking of removing and pulling out the transmission?

Im just trying to find things I can do while im changing the flax plate that I wouldn't want to do again later since im already in there.

Definitely do a convertor while the trans is separated. I'm stock(I travel too much too start modding), got 176,000 miles on the Z, got a Yank SS3600 and love it.
Am I wishing I had done a SS4000,NO,but whichever one I had chosen I would've been happy with.
The Yank SS3600 in city stop and go is as tight as the OEM 1800 convertor. I had a TCI 2800 in it for a while and it was very loose.

Check the sticker code on your door.

GU2 (standard): 2.73
GU5 (optional): 3.23

Also i can't remember how to determine gear ratio on the road. I think it was take first gear up to a certain speed and see at what rpm's you were sitting at. Based on the RPM's it gave you an idea at what gear ratio you are sitting at.

Also if you don't know the age of the TC, in my personal opinion i would rather throw one in there since you have the transmission out. Also great opportunity to throw a larger TC if you like but i believe you will need to get a tune for the TC to ensure lock up and what not or remove certain features in the tranny.

Budget isn't there for the yankSS3600, but may be able to get the Boss Hog Street Bandit 3600 stall.. is that good choice/brand?

If you can't afford a 9.5" billet converter, Yank, RevMax, Circle D, (I think) and PTC sell 11" converters that stall in the 2800-3000 range that will definitely wake up your car. I would go with a company that's well attested on this forum for quality products. "Boss Hogg" just doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

If the transmission's coming out, now's the time. I'd also do a Transgo HD-2 or Sonnax shift kit while the tranny's out. Definitely worth it with a converter going in.

So after looking at the suggested brands and finding these, some aren't in the 3600 range.. everything ive read seems to find that everyone was happier with a 3600 range..

http://www.circledspecialties.com/c-...rformance.aspx

http://www.ptcrace.com/torque-converter-p-1253.html

http://www.revmaxconverters.com/inde...l60e-lsx.html?

http://www.converter.cc/product_p/st...ls3%203000.htm

Some are not much more than the one I was originally looking at, so I may be able to spring for one..
But the question are any of the links above the right ones to begin with? are some even worth it? Should I go with the yank 3000 one?

It goes back to the question of your rear end ratio. Check your door sticker for GU2 or GU5. If you're GU2 (2.73), I'd go 2800-3000 stall. If GU5 (3.23) I'd go 3000-3600.

Be sure to check the warranty. TCI only offers a 90 day warranty on the Breakaway torque converter. They may offer more on some of their other converters. Yank has a 3 year warranty on their SS series and I am sure the others on here are about the same. Spend the money and only buy once. See my thread TCI Breakaway Converter.

thanks, ill check the door sticker tonight when I get home..
I was kinda leaning toward this one as it was close to the original one I was thinking of getting http://www.converter.cc/product_p/st...ls3%203000.htm

Ok, so if the sticker is GU2 then get this one?
http://www.revmaxconverters.com/inde...l60e-lsx.html?
If its GU5 then get the Yank linked above?

I suggest our 278mm option in a 3000 stall. Even if you have the 2,73 it will still drive decent because it is an 11" converter. And I also suggest getting an SFI flexplate, much stronger than the OE version and will not crank again. Be happy to help with any question you have.

3.23s will make a converter feel tighter. That opens up your options some. Depending on the budget, either our 278mm or 245mm will be a good choice. Shoot me an Ask Chris - link in sig, or give me a call at the shop.
