Default Cooler lines / coolant inlet vs outlet 4l60e

Hello,

I am putting a 4l60e into my impala and need help with cooler lines. Specifically which cooler line fitting on the tranny is the inlet or outlet.

I have labeled my tranny with A & B on the cooler line fittings. Can sometime tell me which is the inlet from the radiator and which is the outlet back?

Also if you happen to know which is which for cooler line inlets on the bottom of a small block chevy radiator, that would help a ton. I have an inlet on the driver side and passenger side of the radiator, both on the bottom of the radiator.

Thanks!!!!

Easiest way to remember: lower line on the tranny goes to the lower line on the stock cooler. The fluid flows up the cooler (I know it defies all logic). So bottom is out, top is the returned .

My radiator has cooler line inputs on the bottom of the radiator on both sides? Which is which on it?

^^^What kind of car? I've only seen that on some imports. If that was the case then it wouldn't matter.

Car is a 66 impala, radiator is stock to the 283 it had in it. I need to try and reuse the radiator to save some cash on the build...

Ok so here is my radiator. It's the stock radiator which from what I understand is just a SBC radiator and very common.

I need to know which is which for the granny cooler lines. Here is what I think:

A = radiator fluid return from engine / inlet
B = radiator fluid to engine / outlet
C = pressure to tranny / outlet for trans cooler function
D = return to radiator from tranny / inlet for trans cooler function

Hopefully I am close.

Correct on A and B. Cooler lines don't matter on that radiator I would think..

If it was my transmission and a 4L60e at that, I would bypass the radiator altogether and buy a external cooler.

Hmm. I was hoping to get by with the radiator cooler but I also don't want to damage my tranny.

Something cheap and simple like this be sufficient?

Ok so I got this cooler, seems like it will do the job.

Next question, do I run this cooler stand alone or in-series with my radiator??? Install instructions recommend running it in-series.....So I flushed out the radiator/trans cooler portion, all seemed clear but just curious if I should be worried about stuff from the old radiator tranny cooler portion in my rebuilt tranny?

I'd run it separate in all cases except very cold climates. I've found, after trying both ways and monitoring temps, the radiator coolers actually act like warmers up till about 180 degrees.

Ok, I'm in CO so it's not overly cold, coldest I've driven here was in the 40's. I'll just run it stand alone, for some reason I just think that will be better.....plus it's one less hose to run if it's stand alone, lol.
