Default Trans cooler lines/hoses

Are 5/16" id hoses big enough for a 4l80e?

Tried to search and couldnt really get past the an adapter fittings for a 4l80e or what needs to be done for lines when converting a f body to a 4l80.

They make a set of fittings for both new and old style 80s. The new style 80e requires the rear fitting to have a long snout out past the threads that goes into the transmission. Old 80s don't require the special fitting. The threads are 1/4 NPTSM. DO NOT get 1/4 NPT fittings and try to use them. Those are tapered pipe threads and the 80e does not have tapered threads. You will bust the case if you over tighten a tapered fitting into it. The threads in the case are Straight, 1/4 NPTSM. As for lines, 8an seems to be the norm

Thanks. I was already aware about the transmission side fittings and have already installed the correct ones.

So -8 is the recomended size for the trans cooler lines/hoses.

Can anyone confirm that a 98-02 camaro trans cooler built into radiator fittings are a 16mm thread for me? I need to order the fittings for that next

I have never before read of anyone using bigger than 6AN hoses (3/8"ID) for cooling lines, but I don't recall every 4L80E thread.

I think you will want to skip the stock radiator cooler, it is just a simple tube with a diameter of 5/16" or at most 3/8". Certainly not 1/2" which corresponds to 8-AN.
You really should be installing an aftermarket cooler and that is an absolute if you have a higher stall converter.

With cooler lines I say the bigger the better. Im running 1/2 lines on my car, even have 1/2 lines on my ATV oil cooler.

I don't know as I don't have a Gen-4, but are you still determined to use the stock trans cooler?
IMHO, it is barely adequate for a stock engine and 4L60E, certainly not for a higher performance engine running through a 4L80E, especially not with an aftermarket converter.
Now some people use it in series with an aftermarket cooler; in that case there is absolutely no reason to go bigger than 6AN due to the constriction the stock cooler causes.
I know that 01ssreda4 has bypassed the stock cooler entirely.

You know, we are happy to help you with overall solutions and suggestions. Why not tell us more about your overall car, engine and trans plans.

Stock lines aren't big, about 5/16 or 3/8.
