Have you ever had a high stall converter in your car before?

Moved to the Automatic Transmission forum.

A TH400 is not the most streetable trans in the world. But the 3.07 will help a bit. It'll be like driving 4.30s with a 4L60 on the highway.

I have a looser NA-centric 4000 stall with 3.23s and it takes about 3000 rpm to keep up with traffic. So that's a bit much. If I swap out to 3.73s I can get that down closer to 2500 I would think. And a tighter 3600 stall would probably be 2400-2500 with the 3.23s and 2100-2200 with the 3.73s in terms of looseness.

And I think if you're accelerating with traffic, you don't want to be up at 3k+ rpms. You want to stay as close as you can to 2k to make it more responsive in traffic. The downside is you give up some explosiveness when you open it up or go to the track. But a tighter 3600 stall works very well with nitrous. So there's always that to make up for any lack of explosiveness...

Doesn't the TH400 have a 2.5~ first gear?

I would think the minimum stall you could get would be ideal, 2400ish, out of a 9.5" converter from Yank, especially since you say "street car" and "traffic" and 3.0x rear gear.

IMO if you are 95% street you would want an overdrive trans with lockup, and a bit more gearing, say 3.45 or 3.6x~

pushing a lot of stall in a heavy street car (3800lbs) without a lot of torque (500+), and a very tall rear gear (3.0x) will make it unhappy, sloppy, sluggish especially with a 2.5x first gear.

Ok so would i be better of getting a 4l60? And if so, what stall would you put in it. I can swap the gears as well.

With your moderately cammed engine, a 4L60E with a tight 3600 stall and a 3.42 or 3.73 rear is a popular combo that gives great performance and is still very streetable.
Yank and CircleD can provide very tight (streetable) 3600 stalls.

Ok, sounds like I have a new plan. You guys are awesome. Now to start the hunt. Should anything be done to the trans ie. shift kits...

I like PTC, tell them what you have as you've done here....and they will get you together (they don't really do "stalls"). Running a Th400 with 2:73 here, and while it's not great on the freeway....it's not terribly bad either. And it will be far tougher than a 4L60e.....cheaper too.

Don't forget about FTI either! we have several converter options available for both of the platforms you're considering. Check out our online build sheet, all you have you have to do is submit that and one of our converter guys contacts you with your options and recommendations.
