Default 3.23's to 3.73's Who made this swap? How do you like the results?

I already have 3.23's and a converter, but I want to tighten up the looseness. I am considering buying some 3.73 gears. Anyone of you guys had similar set-ups like mine and changed to 3.73's. If so how do you like them? Did they improve you quarter times?

I did 3.73s and gained 2 tenths and 2 mph in the 1/4 when my car was stock...on street tires.

The 3500 stall and 3.73s are a nice combo.

How does the overdrive pull with the 3.73's on top end?

My car goes into 4th at about 120-125 mph on a 6200 rpm shift point...I can't catch 2nd gear from 70 mph anymore...now it's down to 55, it's a big kick in the butt though.

They make driving the car much more fun, but honestly, a good converter doesnt need gears. There are 2.73 geared cars that are just as fast as lower geared cars (numerically higher)....it's really all in the converter.

I too have the same question. Glad you posted it.

I have the 323's with a Yank SY3500.

My car is a daily driver however.
Will it kill my gas mileage?
Even if i drive sensibly?

I made the change when the car was almost stock and before my converter. Gave me only a tenth and 1 mph at the track, but felt much quicker on the street. They're probably helping me more now with the cam. For a bolt-on car I wouldn't bother. They really do tighten up converters though. With my 3.73's and the 2800 Vig, there are people who drive my car that swear it's a stock converter.

Tom: Can you, or anyone else, tell me how much your RPM's increased over the 3.23's after installing the 3.73's when crossing the finish line of the 1/4 mile? Ever glance at the tach when crossing finish line? Thanks. WJ Oh, that woud be w/a 26" tall tire, also.

I have 3.73's in mine and in 3rd gear at the end of the 1/4 the tach says a little over 6100-6300rpm. I have my shift point set to 6100, rev. limiter at 6400 and in 3rd it will hold it through the 1/4, but if I put it in 4th it will shift before the end. I think I'm running out of gear with the 3.73's. If I were you I would stick with the 3.23's until you put a cam in it and rev higher.

With 3.23 gears already keep them and get a stall

You think that will do it? I keep hearing that the rear ends on those cars junk and if i add any real power to the car it will brake. If i get a stall for an everyday driver how high should i go? And should i get a tranny cooler while im at it? Thanks for your help!

consider this... George at TTP ran a 10.5 in his '02 A4 Formula on stock suspension and rear!! I'm sure the stock rear isn't THAT bad

Wow, that's hard to believe. w/a 26" tire and 3.23's w/Vig 3200, I'm crossing finish line in 3rd at 45-4600 rpm. I figured 3.73's would put me at about 4800-5000 rpm's tops. Could your trans be slipping, or converter slipping that much? Anyone else contribute to this thread? Thanks. WJ
