Raybestos Z Pak (3-4 clutches)-opinions-
I just smoked the 3-4 clutches by doing the highway kickdown. After doing a search here I now know this is a no-no. I also looked like I lost to a relatively stock looking WS6. Anyway from what I've read it looks like the Raybestos Z Pak may be the strongest option. I know a lot of people have had good luck with other clutches but I would really like to hear about this product. Any news good or bad. Doing a search it looks like they still may be too new to have much feedback yet. If I don't hear too many negative things I think I am going to try them.

i've burned up two sets in the same trans. both at about 1700 miles. firsttime i lost 4th, then 3rd, by about 1500 miles.
second time, i lost second gear. pulled it apart to find the band burned up again. no biggie, that's from dynoing in 2nd gear starting at 15 mph. but, just happened to notice the 3-4 clutch pack, which started at .055" (they recommend .050"-.070"), was already over .100" at 1700 miles!!! so, this trip i put the commercial clutch pack in that i always have used. i'm coming up on 1500 miles. so, we'll see if it's the z-pak or something with the trans itself.

hey
We installed 15 sets when they first came out...didn't have much luck over 500 hp. we don't use then at all ,we threw away 3 sets theres no way I want my guys making a mistakes and useing them......If you have repeated 3/4 burn you more than likely have a pressure problem...Hope this helps ...Dave

I use the 8 & 9 clutch setup (Borg Warner Hi-Energy's) in my 3-4 clutch packs. They have worked very well for me in the past 9 years. The BW setup is not all I do to achieve this, I use the larger boost valve from Trans-Go, Corvette servo (which LS1's have), heavier clutch return springs (Trans-Go), a much larger 3rd gear feed hole ,155" - .187", reduced 3-4 clutch clearance (.028" - >037"), etc. I hope this helps.

hey
I don't think it's about good or bad as much as it is work or don't work. When we build for performance our name goes on the product, everyone is watching our products....we install the Z-pac and it doesn't work it's not the Z-pac didn't work..... its the Rock-On didn't work!!!! How many times do you think we can put a product out like that before we are out of business???IMO I am not a big fan of the one sided clutch, I am not a big fan of the thin steels, I/We build around them..... giving thick steels and clutchs more attention.....this is just one mans opinion ...one way of doing things. I have a plummer here in town we used z-pacs in and he's been out a couple years now .....he's in and out of traffic all day long...we'll go back with the z-pac there... but not in our performance products....I hope this helps...Dave

look here ,i tested the raybestos z back when it was developed.you can contact frank slocum at raybestos to verify this is true.we found it to be a loser in hi horsepower applications.my wife killed it with her 11 second buick grand national in short order.here is what works.period.all of you newcomers can either listen or learn the hard way.the best setup is 8 or 9 stock paper 062" frictions with 072 " and .101"steels to gain clearance and use a 4l60e steel plate .101"for the pressure plate and apply plate.use early 700r4 type apply ring.feed holes .160 ",th 400 int band return spring inboard of the servo as your third accumulator spring,235 psi max line.do not use the 3/4 load release springs in the clutch pack or perform the transgo 3rd accumulator ball deletion and plate mod.

Here's a dumb n00bish question I can't seem to find an answer to. Do you have to pull the tranny and open it up to change the 3-4 clutch pack? I can't find a thread anywhere that describes the procedure for changing the 3-4 clutch pack. I know, I should just spend the $25 and get the 4L60-E manual but I'm cheap. I ask this dumb question because some people make it sound like they change their clutch packs like underwear which in turn leads me to believe it's a simple thing to do. Thanks.

Thanks for the clarification. I've been learning a TON from everyone around here. There just seems to be a more friendly and helping attitude on this message board compared to the other import message boards I used to frequent. Thanks again.

Well this sucks. I just had the Z-Pak clutches installed in my 4L60E and my car should be in the 450 rwhp-up range. I knew the tranny would be a weak link, but if it holds for the season I will be okay.

TECH Junkie
Chris718 does not use the forum anymore...
He is Chris at CK Performance.
He really does not do much of any THM700-R4/ 4L60E stuff anymore.
You can try calling his business at: 631-218-1989... Hopefully Michelle will answer and not Chris.

Some way to weed out morons
First post is used to bump a 14 year old thread...and to ask if someone still builds a trans. Kids go from kindergarten to graduation in that amount of time...come on man.

Forum users like this are the reason we need either a "waiting list" period or a certain number of views, etc etc.
