How did converter install go when you installed it OR how much did you pay a shop?
I am just trying to find out from others how their TC installs have gone when they installed it by themselves AND also how much others have paid to have a new one installed by a shop. Thanks.

The reason I am posting this is because I just received my new fuddle 3400/2.1 and I can either install it myself in my driveway or have it installed at a tranny shop. Thanks.

i'm pretty much a moron and did it myself......i was sore for a while, and i can see why you would pay a few hundred bucks to have someone else do it, but it really wasn't too bad.........the bolts on top of the tranny are fun, but other than that it's not too bad.....

Arctic, its really not bad of a swap at all. I did it w/ my lil bro and we had it knocked out in a couple hours (we do work pretty damn good together though). For your help, raise the car as high as possible, all four corners on stands. Before you start on the top trans bolts, remove the Xmember and drop the trans down ( I like to drain the pan prior, or you get lots of mess). By dropping the rear, it allows you much more access to the bolts (13mm, it'll help to have a swiveling socket, or use a universal and short socket). And yes, the exhaust from Ypipe back needs to be disconnected to let the trans hang down to full extent, you can practically reach up around to the top three from the passenger side if you got some monkey arms like me Make sure when you remove the converter to not let it ride off the input shaft, or you can damage the seal, clean the bellhousing before and after placing the new TC up in there. Make sure the new TC seats all the way down onto the input shaft, three distinct clicks or locks, Spin-click, repeat two more times. Have fun, and put the cooler line clips back on with the trans before you jack the trans up and install the lines, helps if the clips face rearward.

Torque Converter Install Guide
Here is a step by step guide with pics if you decide to do it on your own. It's not too bad of an install but it is time consuming. Shop prices vary by place. It can be anywhere from $200-$400.

Here in Western PA the usual price for LS1 verter install is $250
I've done my share of tranny/verter R&R over the years in the driveway - I now know better to leave it up to the guys with the lift!

just got mine installed yesterday paid 400. Typical prices in nj range from 350-580 so call around like i did. I have installed a few trannies/converters before and i know what it takes to put one in. This time around i had the money and got it done. I could have saved that money for other mods but id rather pay to have stuff done now rather than me do it with a few choice words along the way.

It's a pain in the *** and never seems to get much easier.. but I always do it myself. I can't justify paying for anything to get done that I can do myself just as well. Get the car really high and make sure the converter is seated correctly before you bolt the transmission up!

Have had to do it 3 times now, don't ask , lol. And first time took like 20 hours spread out over 3 nights, just taking our time. Second time took like 6 hours, and the third time took about 4-5. All done on jackstands in my garage, if I had a lift, would only take maybe 3-4. Its not bad, its just bolts.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I have decided to go ahead and install the Fuddle 3400/2.1 converter and 24,000 gvm cooler myself. Shops around here (Grand Rapids, MI) gave me estimates ranging from $325 - $450 just for the converter swap. This way I will get to learn more about my tranny as well as spend some quality time w/ her
I also decided to keep the rest of the tranny stock at this time since it is not having any issues. From what I have read on this site I should be fine with a stock 4L60E with my current setup, including the original sun shell and sprag.
