The 4L65e is pretty much a 4L60e however it does have some beefier parts. The stock 4L65e has 5 pinion planetaries, a bearing style reaction shaft, hardened shafts, added 7 clutch 3-4 pack and in some late models I've seen hardened sunshells.

The 4l65e comes in the GTO starting in 05. The 04 is a 60e if you care. Just thought id through that in.

The question becomes, can a 4l60e be converted to a 4l65e? Other than that, would just a full rebuild with aftermarket parts make one stronger than the other could get to?

Default 60 to 65

Yes a 60 can be converted to a 65. All the parts are interchangeable. If you check out the FLT site a level 5 is pretty much what you guys are talking about. IMO our level 5 is much stronger than a stock 4l65e. We do sell parts for those of you who would like to do it yourself. However our on line store is not complete. You can make requests on line or simply give us a call.

My I sent my 4l60e core to Gearstar and they overnighted me a new 4l65e.

Here are pics of my new GearStar 4L65e:
