Flywheel, flexplate, most people know what you're talking about when you use either word.
I don't think they make aluminum flexplates, so in a case like this maybe you need to be more specific and use the proper word.

Autos use Flexplates because as the name implies, it flexes. Flywheels do not flex and would result in damage to an auto trans. Flexplates give when under load and this prevents the trans from being damaged. You should not use the term interchangably, as both parts are not. Kind of like saying what kind of pressure plate should I use on my auto.
Most flexplates are made of sheet metal stampings or are billet. The sheet metal units are strong enough for most applications, especially the SFI approved units. Plus they would probably weigh less.
