No VSS, problem??

No VSS, problem?? I read somewhere that if you dont hook up the VSS the car might die out and cause all sorts of problems, is that true or will the speedo just not work?

vss 4L60e I dont know about other trannies but in my 01 Z28 (has a 4L60E) my vss went out, the speedo did not work and it would not auto shift at all I could shift 1st to 2nd manually when i moved the shifter to D or OD it just reved. do know if that helps but hope that does
