Default Will my stall kill my transmission?

Hey guys I just installed a Midwest 3600 2.6STR verter. I dont have a transmission cooler yet but I plan on putting one this weekend. What are some do's and dont's of driving with a stall? What are my biggest enemies? I have MT ET radials on the back so Im putting the power down. BTW my trans. is bone stock and my car is just a full bolton setup not some torque monster big cube engine.

DO: put a cooler on
DON'T: drive your car until the cooler is on

Well, I dont have a choice this week. I have to get to class but it is like 1.5 miles and the Chicken Express is about 3 miles so I shouldnt get it too hot. Will driving it down the highway heat it to a point of destruction as in the converter being locked?

youll be fine until you get a cooler. just dont flog it until you get one hooked up. and try not to sit in traffic too long. not having the cooler may only increase temps 20 degrees or so

you BEST NOT let your rpm's go over 3,000! i'd say under 2,500 rpm's - that's accelerationg AND cruising on the highway.

drive your car as little as possible. it's a bad bad BAD idea.

i don't understand why you wouldn't get a cooler with the stall. i mean c'mon, they're $50. a stall will destroy your trans so fast due to heat buildup. i just need to vent here: i have no idea why people spend nearly a thousand dollars on a stall and installation and skimp on a cheap cooler to protect your trans. i don't want to be a jerk, but seriously, i can't sympathize if your tranny gets fried. try to get a ride to school if you can. driving your car is just a terrible idea.

Im not backlashing but I have $200 bucks in a converter with 17 miles on it and it cost $130 for the install. So you guys say heat is my biggest enemy or my only enemy? I will get the cooler tomorrow and borrow some tools.

yep heat is the enemy the TC will slip causing friction which if you go to school you know that causes heat and now you have that big of a stall it will slip alot making alot of heat.

While in some ways a stall can hurt your tranny mainy from heat , in other ways it can actually add to the life by lessening the shock on the hard parts , A stall is after all alot like having a pillow in your drive train ,
You will like the stall , you will hate the low end fuel economy, you will love the launch but absolutley get a very good cooler and if your going to be driving in traffic alot consider one with a fan for sure

Man I love this board. So many people that actually do know more than me, they are not just the dipshit at college with a mustang on shiny rims trying to tell me what I should do next and that they are going to put a blower on their stang. Performabilt-you are correct, I love the launch but hate the fuel economy and can tell a huge difference in mpg in 25 miles of driving. I did not know exactly what part of the converter generated the heat, I did, however, know that I must get a cooler. My shifts seem much softer, is that normal? Should I get a shift kit? Here is the entire point of my post. I CANNOT afford a new tranny and am willing to do whatever maintenance and minor upgrades are necessary.

Shift kit will certainly firm up the shifts. Don't fret about the cooler....just get it on there ASAP. It won't hurt anything for a day or two and with the short distances you drive it won't ever reach operating temp. Just forego cruising until that cooler is in place. Have fun with it!!

Ok guys, I got a cooler on this afternoon just like I said I was going to do. I mounted it in front of the AC condenser and to the pass. side in front of the primary cooling fan. The cooler I chose is 3/4"x10"x15" made by Hayden. I double checked and my tranny fluid goes this route: to the radiator, out the radiator, in cooler, out cooler into return line. Am I good to go? Just beat the hell out of everything now? I need all the tips I can get cause what I learn on here is probably how I will drive. After I get responses on this, I will leave the thread alone and quit botherin you guys.

Get a tranny temp gauge just for extra reassurance. You can always monitor the temps and if you start to get hot after flogging it, you can back off and cool down for a while.

Yes its 100% normal to have the shifts feel softer! but I would recoment getting a shiftkit and a temp guage! The shift kit will greatly incresse he firmness of your shifts!

With my 3600 stall and 24k cooler I usually see around 160 degrees, measured at the pressure port. If it's damn hot outside and I'm beating on it temps will climp to 175-180.

When you do your cooler. Bypass the radiator. Running a cooler with the use of the radiator it runs hot. Just run it straight thru the cooler, and it will run cooler.

On the directions, it recommended using it with the stock radiator cooler claiming it drops the temperature 20% before entering the cooler. I thought about running the cooler as a standalone unit but right now it goes through the radiator first. Has anyone besides CrawlinWS6 done this?

Just to clarify and no offense, a stall does not destroy a trans, you don't spend a grand on a stall, you don't install a cooler with a stall, it is a torque converter. A "stall" is what a horse resides in.
