Default Sonnax 77805E-K and Converter Troubles

I contacted Fuddle about my converter troubles and he replied back saying that the problem was in the valve body. He sent me a link to this page:
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404039

He also said thgat the sonnax 77805E-K is designed to fix the problem. I already installed a transgo HD2 with no improvment in lockup.

Has anyone heard of this Sonnax kit, will it help at all? Do I need a whole new valve body? Should I just get a new trans?

The sonnax kit is designed to upgrade replace the early design lockup valve found in late model 4l60 transmissions. If memeory serves me correctly the factory ugrade valve kit started in 01 or so. If you are having lock up troubles after only a converter install i would suspect a converter issues. If the problem started simltaneously with a shift kit/converter install i would start at the valve body. either way try a trans shop for a consult they might be able to help.

The problem started occuring after (im not sure how long it came gradually) the converter install. That was last yr. I installed the shift kit on thursday and it didn;t alliviate the problem.

Sounds like excessive converter clutch clearance in the converter. If its excessive enough to cuase ecess slip when engaged it'll wear out like any half applied slipping clutch.

did you tune the converter? you may want to raise the lockup a few miles per hour. is it chattering? or is it not locking up at all?

Actually you can adjust the converter lockup pressures but its not easy. the problem is most likely a bad converter clutch.

There's "bad", and there's "bad". Any smaller-than-
stock diameter converter that still uses a stock
area apply piston is going to make less torque
capacity for the same clutch friction. You can't
expect the stock tune settings to work except
by the slip learning, and that scheme sucks wind,
wanders around all over the place cold to hot etc.

If you haven't fixed the known slip factors (PWM,
0% line at cruise) in the tune then this particular
valve seems a low probability shot in the dark.
The kit that eliminates PWM might be a better
bet but you still have the stock line pressure profile
problem. That's a brain problem, not hardware.

There are so many people with small cheap converter
models seeing slip, and most of them I expect do not
have "bad" clutches, only inferior ones. There's a
simple explanation for most of the trouble that does
not have to do with internal transmission defects,
although these -could- be present. But fix the simple
and accessible stuff first if you are on a budget.

I installed the TransGo kit last week, eliminating PWM. I have had my car tuned, but did nothing with the lkine pressure for the converter, because the guy whoi tuned it said he never needed to do it to any other car. I remember at one time the converter did lock up coirrectly, I remember the change from uinlocked to locked was much more srastic. It never chatters, and will refuse to lock once this slip sets a P1870 code. I restart the car and it locks fine. I guess I'll see about getting the line pressure bumped, install the sonnax kti. If that doesn't work... Performabuilt, I'll be at your shop soon.

Replace the Converter. Just be done with it. The clutch is probaly toast by now from all the slipping. If the adaptive can't lock it and sets a 1870 then its most likel beyond a pressure adjustment.,

Does the TransGo do what the Sonnax kti is supposed to?

JimmyBlue, is it possible to change those settings with HPTuners? Do you know how?

Most of the trans go kits do include that sonnax valve. The best way to check for sure is to call transgo directly.
