Default 4l60e overheating

my 4l60e is getting hot in stop and go traffic. when im cruising it stays perfect, even at high speeds. when i enter a neighborhood and have to stop alot it starts getting really hot, it got to 230 before i shut it off one time. my transmission feels like it is running perfect, it shifts like it should. i changed the filter and the fluid did not look burnt. there are no codes or anything. anyone have any idea what the hell is going on?

I was going to say if your runing through the radiator and do not have and external cooler you trans temp will always be higher in thouse conditions that engine temp .And it hot weather the engine temp hitting 230 would not seem at all unreasonable .
and a 230 trans temp may be a little warmer than desired but its not going to kill anything imediatley only continual long term

You might want to try a cooler with a fan.

i took it out again and started driving around to let it get warmed up. it started to make a grinding and vibrating noise from the tranny area. it sounds like its the torque converter. could the torque converter failing cause the fluid to get hot. it only vibrates in the low rpm range.

Yes a failing converter can cause extreme overheating and subsequent damage to trans .
In fact in cases of converter clutch failure they can actually block cooler flow and cook everything , If you can remove the inspection plate and try and veiw the converter in the same area the bolts go in on the flat for signs of heating discolored or flaked paint or worse bluing of the converter surface , Also smell fluild for a burnt smell
