Question 2000 Z28 A4, Weird trans problem...please help me diagnose this!

Ok, so I finally got my car on the road and it's acting weird now. When I test drove it the day I bought it everything seemed kosher but now it shifts weird.

It seems to me like a slip, but I just figured I'd ask around and see if I'm missing something...please read this entire thing before posting, so you have the entire idea. As always any help would be greatly appreciated! I made an appointment at Cartek for next week but figured if anyone could help me out and save me the $85 it's going to cost to look at it that'd be great!

When I drive normal, it shifts fine...when I give it full throttle, it shifts fine. BUT, when I give it part throttle like I'm trying to pull out in traffic, it almost hangs up and seems like it takes a good 2 full seconds to up or downshift. I've never had this happen to me in any other car, I've seen slipping transmissions and usually they do it all the time, not just part throttle. And I checked the fluid and it's got enough and looks clean as hell.

And if this helps, I just had to pull a code last week for the 02 sensors because of my new maf ends...I wound up putting stockers back and clearing the code(I mention this because when i drove it with the new ends that was the first time it shifted weird and then the SEL came on). And the other night while driving I raced someone and the service engine light came on again and stayed on for a day...then when I finally took it to work to scan it the light went out so I didn't bother.

So am I f*cked or will I get lucky and have an easy fix?

Mine started doing that right before the shift solenoids went out. WOT worked fine, barely any worked fine, but midrage it got all muddy and wouldnt shift unless I gave it more.

Damn...guess that means I'm screwed. New trans time?

How long did yours last until it took a sh*t? Is this something I can live with for a little while or am I on borrowed time?

Mine is doing this same thing. How many miles are on yours. I have about 84K now.
Shift solenoids huh? Sounds expensive... sh*t.

Arc00TA do you remember what your mileage was when the solenoids went?

Mine is also popping 3/4 O2 sensors bringing the SES light on. At first only at WOT but now the SES pops at about 3000 rpm or so. Between shifts the thing just kinda farts around and doesn't wanna go.

Dont be quite so quick there, The MAF can cause odd eratic shifts at part throttle and soft shifts, I would look at the tuning first,

That's exactly why I asked...I figured as much. That's also why I mentioned me toying with my stock maf. I might look into a new maf in that case. I accidentally descreened the stock ends when I took them off(dented the screen so I took it out). Maybe that's my problem...because at part throttle it doesn't pull through the powerband smoothly, it kind of hangs up, sputters and then takes a while to shift.

Thanks for the help, I hope that's it...much better than having to do a trans swap! I should be ok, the car's my daily but I only drive 3 miles to work and I'm not going to beat on it until it's fixed.

solenoids not that hard to replace if that was the case. they clip onto the valve body, i dont remember if the clips are accessible from the top or bottom, but if you can get them from the bottom all you would have to do is drop the pan, otherwise you'd have to drop the valve body, not the hardest thing to go.

Forgive me performabuilt cause I'm a noob here, but by tuning do you mean the actual programming in the car? or like get a tune up with spark plugs and wires and stuff.

Oh and I haven't done anything to my MAF. My car is bone stock. Maybe it isn't his screens being out?

If I press down my gas pedal to anywhere in the middle and hold there, the car will go a little bit, but then it will gradually surge faster and faster. It kind of does its own thing even though I am not giving it any more.

Similar syptoms can have different causes , But in each case its sounds like some tuning or sensor issue, And by tuning I do mean the PCM programing

So I should just go get the dealer to reset everything or go get it tuned at a shop or something?

Well you would need to go to a aftermarket tuner unless your car is completely stock the dealer would be unable to help you.

It is all stock, my experience with the dealer is that it is 150% as expensive as anywhere else though. What do I tell them I want done? Just have the tuning checked or reset? I am setting off 3 of the four O2 sensors. Would they all have gone bad?

Well its possible they have gone bad but also to me sounds like you may have a wiring issue loose or poor/corroded conections perhaps

Hmmmm would that be possible for the car to act the same way almost everytime if I had some weak wiring? I know anything is possible, how about probable.
