I'd like to know, as well...
But more importantly, should we look for a 'free air' type, or a regular one that can incorporate the trunk as a box? I remember in the olden days, I had a pair of 6x9's on a shelf of a car and wow, they hit pretty good by using the trunk(s volume)! I'm sure there's a point that it doesn't as much, and perhaps you need to modify slightly for sealing and/or porting, but curious.
BTW - you running a dedicated amp, also? I'm sure that'll make a big difference! In my WK, I ran an older Punch 150 on a small 10" and wow, did that sound good (had to turn the amp down though, as R-F made a too powerful unit for an oem system )

I have this sub in the back location Pioneer 12 inch TS-SW3001S4
and here is the box that was custom built for it
I love it, you cant even see it when you open the trunk, you have to squat down to see it

I just took mine out and put a Boston acoustic G5 12" sub in a sealed box with a JL 500/1 amp. Hits pretty hard for 1 12. Still running the stock deck and Bose components for now.

I plan to switch to an aftermarket screen eventually and to some nice components as well but what I have now bass wise is almost too much for the stock stuff. I don't even turn the bass **** past halfway. It vibrates the stuff in the car pretty good even with dynamat in there. I do plan to switch to a ported box soon though.

May not be a problem and perhaps they can be installed in any direction, but I am curious, anyhow.

You can mount the amp any way u like. If u have a quality amp the proper size for the sub you are running, it shouldn't get that hot. I can blast mine for hours and it still feels cool to the touch. I paid a bit more for my JL amp though than I would have for a cheaper brand in the same size. There is a difference in quality though. Get what u pay for...

I like the box and good idea...except I am curious about mounting an amp upside down like that (least it looks that way in pic), with regard to heat; do you think there are any issues with installing it like this, in the long run? I realize most of the heat is transferred to the heatsinks, but seems like the remaining heat would just keep 'hitting' the components on the board(s), since it obviously rises, and the heat generators are typically on the top of the board(s).
