Looking into a Father's Day gift to myself

Rear end whine or similar noise, vibration cruising between 2500-3500RPM in 5th gear, electrical oddities of any kind, rust through on frame rails(check inside too) toward front of floorboard, excessive engine movement(mounts), proper clutch disengagement. Probably a ton more others will add.
Oh and make sure it goes "vroom" when you hit the pedal on the right.

Rear end whine is not indicative of an issue always. Mine had a last gen diff installed by dealer years ago under warranty, and it has always whined.
My recommendation is to find a current V1 owner, and bribe them into looking at the car with you

Either way i've learned to live with it, I wish it was quiet, but it's not noisy enough that it's worth spending money on a replacement diff which may or may not eliminate the issue.

I believe the whine comes from pinion angle stress. It's easily misaligned with some spirited driving and replacing the diff is only a temporary (and expensive) fix. I think the aluminum case is to blame. Our same differential design in steel or cast iron would have solved a lot of problems from the beginning. Some end up worse than others. My 4th gen makes some noise, but has been in the car since '09.

I was looking for a gen1 for almost a year in SoCal.
I wanted one in good shape and semi low miles. I had my eyes on a 06-07 for the rear end but it wasn't a must.
Anyways.... a year later and I just found my car and picked it up last week all the way in Phoenix.
I will say that most the cars at the small local dealers are all trashed
Best of luck

you were 10k away from v2. i cant see a stock v1 no matter miles or condition holding that kind of value but to each their own. its all about being happy. shop around and you can fine them between 12-20k depending miles and mods.

i have driven both and as you can see my preference was the v. stock vs stock i feel the V felt more sporty vs the g8's lazy shifts. interior in either wont blow you away. if you are going to mod it i say V. if you dont want to replace bushings, clutch, and other crap then maybe g8.

However, the G8 may not have the extensive driveline issues like the V1 does. From motor mounts all the way through cradle bushings, all the rubber on the V does not hold up and causes serious issues. It's a bit ridiculous.
