Default Looking into a Father's Day gift to myself

Looking into a 2004 CTSV, anything I should look for before I pull the trigger on the car. It has a clean title the car is silver and is clean inside and out. Car hasn't been modded, but will be soon after 💀

Rear end whine or similar noise, vibration cruising between 2500-3500RPM in 5th gear, electrical oddities of any kind, rust through on frame rails(check inside too) toward front of floorboard, excessive engine movement(mounts), proper clutch disengagement. Probably a ton more others will add.

Oh and make sure it goes "vroom" when you hit the pedal on the right.

Rear end whine is not indicative of an issue always. Mine had a last gen diff installed by dealer years ago under warranty, and it has always whined.

My recommendation is to find a current V1 owner, and bribe them into looking at the car with you

Did GM say that was normal or you didn't complain? I'm not terribly particular about noises but I am VERY particular when I have a warranty and noise...what if the noise turns into something bad after the warranty is gone?

Rear end whine is stupid common. Most of them do it especially if you change the front bushing like you pretty much have to

The dealer replaced my quiet Gen 1 diff with the Gen 4 diff way past my warranty ending, due to my concern of reliability issues with the Gen 1. I also replaced the diff bushing with an aftermarket one. So it's either the new diff (which I was very happy to have at no cost out of pocket), or the diff bushing as others have mentioned.

Either way i've learned to live with it, I wish it was quiet, but it's not noisy enough that it's worth spending money on a replacement diff which may or may not eliminate the issue.

Gotcha. Better/newer diff for free out of warranty, I wouldn't have fussed, either.

I believe the whine comes from pinion angle stress. It's easily misaligned with some spirited driving and replacing the diff is only a temporary (and expensive) fix. I think the aluminum case is to blame. Our same differential design in steel or cast iron would have solved a lot of problems from the beginning. Some end up worse than others. My 4th gen makes some noise, but has been in the car since '09.

Wow it's pretty hard to find a nice V at a good price and not be on a lien, it sucks the one I wanted sold. How much are people buying gen1 V's for?

I was looking for a gen1 for almost a year in SoCal.

I wanted one in good shape and semi low miles. I had my eyes on a 06-07 for the rear end but it wasn't a must.

Anyways.... a year later and I just found my car and picked it up last week all the way in Phoenix.

I will say that most the cars at the small local dealers are all trashed

Best of luck

Full service records
Paint is 9/10
Interior is 9.5/10

Ya, it wasn't cheap but I've had my eyes on one for a long time

you were 10k away from v2. i cant see a stock v1 no matter miles or condition holding that kind of value but to each their own. its all about being happy. shop around and you can fine them between 12-20k depending miles and mods.

What year did you get? I actually have my eye on 2 private sales (04 and 05) with in a decent price. But the more I see my self paying $10-13k for 11 year old car the more I see myself getting into a 09 G8 GT for $14k

i have driven both and as you can see my preference was the v. stock vs stock i feel the V felt more sporty vs the g8's lazy shifts. interior in either wont blow you away. if you are going to mod it i say V. if you dont want to replace bushings, clutch, and other crap then maybe g8.

From what I have seen, only the GXP has the better front brakes and not the big rears. What about the GT? What drew me to the V all along was the factory big brakes. Performance and looks. I cheaped out and got a 7/10 2007 car with 100K for $13K.

The G8s will need some bushing replacements too. They're just now getting to that age. They're still GMs afterall. Pedders had poly bushings available as soon as the G8s hit the market.

However, the G8 may not have the extensive driveline issues like the V1 does. From motor mounts all the way through cradle bushings, all the rubber on the V does not hold up and causes serious issues. It's a bit ridiculous.
