Default Go ahead, tell me what I already know...

I got stuck in a bad situation the other day and had to navigate my way through an 'obstacle course' in reverse. I was running late to view a house with my real estate agent, and I ended up curbing my wheel and gashing my sidewall. These are brand f**king new (few hundred miles) Hankooks... and I opted out of the road hazard. In my 17 years of driving, I've never curbed a wheel or damaged a sidewall. FML.

Anyhow, I was just about to order a new tire and call it a $200 mistake (probably over $300 by the time I get it mounted and get the rash fixed), but I figured I might as well snap a pic and get some other opinions first. As the thread title says- go ahead, tell me what I already know.

I think your only option would be to replace the tire. I don't think there's anyway to get the tire back to new, or smooth it over. That really sucks though, I feel for you buddy! Hope everything works out

Bummer - you could always keep it as a spare, or sell it on CL for whatever you can get out of it to help recoop your costs....

...Or mount it on the other side of the car, and NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!!!

HAHAHA...

Thanks for the sympathy, that helps, lol.

I've already got a spare with a new runflat. It isn't really the cosmetic issue, I'm more concerned with having a blowout at interstate speeds. That would be a bad day!

As long as you can't see cords showing in any way where the tire got chewed up you would be fine not replacing it and just driving on it. I've seen a lot worse.

If you can see chords or feel chords if you push on the rubber Id replace the tire. Just my .02

Think twice before running that tire. I bought a set of factory blemished tires for a beater once. The tire shop made what appeared to be a minor gouge in the side wall to mark it. 3 of them blew out on the highway at different times. ALL were blown where the little gouge was! Jus sayin.......

I feel your pain on that one.

I had a soccer mom force me to zig my V1 to avoid collision in a shopping center and I caught a curb jutting out. Cut the sidewall exposing the cords and took a chunk out of my chrome plated OEM wheel. She was long gone by the time I got out to view the damage.

1 new wheel + plating + 1 new runflat = $650

I couldn't drive with any peace of mind knowing I had a chunk out of the tire. Bite the bullet and get a new tire. The wheel can be repaired.

Yeah, I guess I'll bite the bullet and pick up a new one.

I think that tire should be fine. Ideal... no but i doubt it will blow out. Id rotate that to the inside if it were me. I ran a 295/35 on the rear of my car for 10k miles that had a plug on the inner sidewall... lol

Got the tires for free so initially the plan was to test fit them on my wheels to see how a 295 would fit but once i had em on, i figured screw it... ill use em for now. lol Drove to Austin and back from Friendswood a couple times (round trip 500 miles or so each time) and everywhere else i needed to go until the strings were showing on the tread patch and i had them replaced.

I know I wouldn't want to risk a blowout at 70mph for 200 bucks . . .

Buy another one, get roadside on it. Wait a month, make claim, send back crappy tire. Sell or keep replacement.

Haha, just kidding!

I just can't win. I scored a good deal on a used tire. Got it for $70 shipped! Here's a link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1-Use...Q5fAccessories

It arrived about 2 hours ago, and it looks great. Barely used, matched the minimal wear on my tires almost perfectly. So I took the wheel off the car, and hustled to a tire shop down the street to have it mounted. There's nobody waiting, so they mounted it right up. A little too perfect, huh?

I got back home and bolted the wheel up, and when I put the car down, something didn't look right. The sidewall looked different on this tire. I start comparing, and then I notice- HE LISTED IT AS THE WRONG SIZE ON THE AUCTION. Its a 245/40/18 AND ITS ALREADY MOUNTED ON MY WHEEL.
