Default Transmission Growl?!

So, I have been doing a ton of maint work on the 04 CTSv I just got.

Changed the oil twice, swapped out the dex cool & now the trans fluid. The trans was filled with something resembling gear oil. Now, I put in full synthetic Valvoline ATF.

But, the trans sounds just the same - It seems to growl(well, that's the best way I can describe it). It didn't have any metal in the oil that I drained, it shifts perfect without any grinds at all & has no pop outs whatsoever.

But, it seriously has a sound of a true gear box - Nothing bad, but consistent until I get to higher gear(5th & 6th).

Any thoughts? Is this how they all sound?

Are you sure its the trans and not the diff? Obviously one is speed dependent and the other RPM, easy to tell apart, but the reason I brought it up is the diff's are the traditional noise maker in this platform. How's your trans mount look? Original and crushed I'm guessing.

Everything on the underside looks fresh - the flex discs don't have cracks and the mount looks very rubbery still

The guy I got it from said it had a LS7 clutch - so it looks like they replaced everything around it when doing the clutch - including motor mounts, they have parts store stickers still on them & also look very fresh

I am use to the rear end noises of all LSx cars. My GTO makes plenty & my old z28 had a beautiful whine on deceleration.

But, this seem to be clearly coming from the shifter area of the car.

Well mine made noise. Then I took it to TDP to get rebuilt and upgraded. Had no previous issues except like you're describing. Shifted fine, only growled. And I changed the fluid as well to the ATF MT fluid cocktail at 3:1 ratio. Which made it feel better, but upon rebuild found that damn near my whole shiz was bad. In all it ended up costing 2200$ with the stage 2 rebuild/upgrade. So.....fair warning. Mine had approx 105k miles I think. Food for thought.

Also, Jason said to use ONLY non-synthetic dex3. Not sure why, just know he is the t56 guru so I listened.

My trans shop guy said the same thing, even on the 07 spec. I switched back after my upgrades.

What exactly inside the trans is causing this? Maybe excess clearance between the gears.

Mine I think was the gears wearing out on the shaft. Possibly the counter shaft. I can't remember honestly. This is something that I just pay for blindly and ask no questions. Of course to only

That sounds about what it would sound like - It's not bad, my wife doesn't even notice it

But, I listen to everything - The exhaust on this car is stock and super quiet. So, everything to me is super noticeable.

Sounds like your OCD needs a louder exhaust.

samson are you running a stock shifter or aftermarket? I know you mentioned the previous owner doing the LS7 clutch and was wondering because the B&M that came in my car is much nosier than stock. Also think that is why 07CTS-V's kit comes with the dynomat to dampen the added noise caused by the aftermarket shifters.

+1 on fixing that stock exhaust problem as well
