Wanting A Carbed Vortec

Wanting A Carbed Vortec
I daily drive an 82' Impala with a pos 267 V8 thats itching to get pulled. I get around 11 mpg through the 700r4 and no lock up (dont have a computer) I have been eyeing out carbed vortec setups, and really want to run one in my car. I will be keeping my 700R4 and setting the torque converter lock up, and i would like to keep my holley 600 vacuum secondary carb.
My goal is to make my daily driver faster and more efficient without having to buy another car. Id be happy with 15 mpg city (probably a long shot) but i would like to know which would be best for me? 4.8 or 5.3? Im chooseing between these because there cheap and abundant. But if theres something better to suggest, please feel free to tell me. Its not going to be some crazy low 10 sec race car. Just a strong running low revving small block. Thanks

A 5.3 liter with a performer RPM intake would do wonders in a stock 5.3, mo cam, just that intake and a MSD 6010 or 6012, whatever year you get and a set of shorty headers, i see 80 MPG all day if the carb is adjusted right and the lock up is functioning properly, and it will get out of its own way if you need it to with no issue, i love swaps like this, sound stock and cruise awesome but there is 300+ HP under the hood if and when you need it, not to mention the torque, good decision man.

That shouldnt be a problem. I know of afew people that are handy with carbs. I have the holley 600 that i have and an used edelbrock 1406 thats been lyeing around for awhile. I have other projects going on now but i feel the Need to dig into this swap. Once it begins ill be sure to keep it updated

man, im gonna have to vote for a 4.8 for this one,
the stock one in my truck has 330k miles, is more fun than a stock lt1 and feels stronger and runs better too.
it gets 23mpg in my truck. all stock, just a k&n panel with modded box
im sure it will net very god mpg with a dual plane and properly tuned carb in your impala
im actually gonna drop a stock 4.8 in place of my cam'd 6.0 in my ws6
just to see what kind of mpg i can get.
all stock 4.8 with bolt ons and tune. stock 9.4:1 scr.
iso will be running 87octane. but im not too worried about the best mpg. snce the car has big rims. just want a car i can enjoy and drive that looks good.
i got something lurkin in my garage thats going in my GTA. that will more than satisfy any power addicted urges
i run only 87 octane in my truck now and it loves it. so your car will keep running on 87.

Thats for the advice guys. Anything i get will be better then what im getting now. Im searching local salvage yards but everyone wants close to a grand for a 5.3 with 250k miles on it! and i dont think thatll include accessories either.
If in the next few months i cant find a suitable 5.3 then ill strongly consider the 4.8... However, with that said. I do know that having a smaller engine requires it to work harder (burn more gas) to achieve the same as a larger engine can do. thats the case of what i have right now. My little 267 has to spin up faster for longer to get the big car moving. As where if i were to have a regular 350 in it. The engine wouldnt have to do as much work to get it going.

The mpg I get in my truck. And truck weigh close to
6k lb. I'm sure it would get close to 30mpg if u went Efi in ur impala. These ls4.8 are way different than a sbc.
My race engine is also a low scr 4.8. And I plan on 20+ psi on pump gas and close to 30 on race.
4.8=
3.78 bore = flame propagation
3.268 stroke = higher piston speed
Basically mean I can run 7500rpm shift points on hi psi on an aggressive tune and race gas.
4.8 sounds killer at 7000rpm too

I <3 4.8s
Seriously tho They are very reliable motors when taken care of properly. Like I mentioned earlier,
700$ is a dam good price if engine is complete with harness and PCM. I would just keep Efi if mpg is what ur after. Keep stock tq converter and trans. U would b amazed how responsive the 4.8 is. Even in stock form. I can't think of any other engine I would drive daily.
