LSX 454 help Carb
hey guys. I've got the setup running now and am having a few issues. When the car is up to tempature and I shut it off after about 20min of sitting it doesn't want to start. It's really hard to get it going. Almost like its vapor locked. Could it be the way I ran my fuel line. Look at pic. Also sometimes under hard acceleration when u let off sometimes the car will stahl and be very hard to get restarted. The 700r4 TCI built is slipping a little sometimes and shifts funny. It was suppose to be rated for 800hp. It has a 2800 stahl converter with od lockup Also with the ac on and in gear the car wanted to stahl. I backed out the idle screws another 8th turn and the throttle linkage screw gave it another 1/2 turn and now it will idle in gear with ac on but with ac off and In neutral it's at 1200 rpm. Any help is appreciated and at this point I'm wishing I went EFI. Thinking of just adding an MSD atomic EFI setup. Thanks in advance

Dont go throwing your carb in the trash just yet! A carb can work great once it is setup for your specific engine. That plug shows us that the engine is definitely running very rich. We will need some information to help you tune it though.
Do you know:
What carb is on the engine?
What is the jetting of the carb?
Did you or anyone else tune the idle circuits of the carb with a vacuum gauge?
How long have those plugs been in the engine?

Best thing I ever did (and easiest) was to get an AFR meter. Tuning is soo much easier.
Also, I don't stink up the garage with a gassy exhaust smell
I found that closing my secondary's more, and turning my idle air screws in made a great difference.
I'm going to bet you are 1 1/2-1 3/4 turns out on your idle air as well as too far open on one or both butterflies.

It's got a Holley 950 street HP carb. It has had the ideal screws tuned by a friend that's pretty good with carbs and we had a vacuum gauge on it. The plugs have been in for 30-40 miles and that's all the engine has on it. I do have 02 sensors maybe I should send this thing to a dyno tuner.

Can someone help me on where to start with the carb idle screws? I've never tuned a carb. What should I get to help me out. Also does the way I routed the fuel line hurt anything? Also when it's up to tempature and you stand behind the car it's still blowing what looks like raw fuel out the tail pipes Thanks for the help

Make sure your floats are set right before you do anything else.

Fuel pressure @ 7lbs too.

It has sight glasses or plugs on the side of each bowl depending on the carb, If its got sight glasses put it at 3/4 high on glass. If its got plugs. Pull the plugs adjust just to the bottom of the hole. Adjusters are on the top of each bowl. You need a screw driver and a 5/8 box wrench. Just crack the screw loose with the screw driver and turn the nut clockwise to lower and counter clockwise to raise. Start with your mixture screws at one turn out. Use your vacuum gauge to finish adjusting. Keep all four equal. If you have power valves in the carb. Make sure you have them at half the vacuum. They have numbers right on them. If its not the floats, fuel pressure, or power valves. Then I would drop the jets probably Four sizes, because its definitely pig rich, then check again. But if its sitting there idling with fuel blowing out the tail pipes then I would say its the floats. Make sure you change Your oil because I'm sure its in the oil if its that rich.

With Idle screws... I screw them all the way down on each side first and do one full turn out to start as a baseline.
Setting float is also important... fuel should just barely come out the site hole.
Plugs definitely TO RICH... but carb tuning and timing may be hurting you before you start on adjusting plug heat range.
Are you using a MSD box? use baseline timing to start.
also... I am not a fan of TCI tranny and converters... hopefully you have better luck than I did.
