Default Need Some Advice

Ok Tomorrow is a big day for me, the whole motor idea with my friend fell through... I have a v6 camaro but I have two camaros tomorrow to choose from.. well let me know what you guys think

Option A)
1996 Camaro SS 128k miles everything is good on thevehicle except tranny doesnt go from 2nd to 3rd its automatic. I found a tranny for 400 bucks and my uncle can install it for 300 dollars. The car is priced at 2000 Firm. So total cost will be $2700

Option B)
1996 Camaro Z28 170k miles with heads rebuilt 30k miles ago. Has a MOD cam, New fuel pump ,New fuel pressure regulator ,New fuel filters ,New distributor ,New spark plugs ,New ignition and vat/key system. Only problem is a small freon leak at the input pin and oxidized hood (im doing the 98 conversion anyhow) This one I brought down to $2200 from $2400

With either car im taking it to Gearhead Garage here in Gilbert, AZ to have them rebuild the motor and do some internal work and Bore it out to a 383 for around $3500 bucks which is reasonable.

So please I would greatly appreciate it on which camaro to purchase that will benefit me in the long run. Im just worried about the whole tranny problem with the SS. Thanks

if it were me id buy a decent ls1..

by the time you rebuild the motor and make it a 383 along with redoing the front end your going to be looking at around 6-7k.. this isnt even factoring in a rear end and a built transmission along with the suspension to handle it..

why not just buy an ls1?

i just bought my pewter one for 8500 (already had all the mods on it).. and i sold my white one for 5100...
so cheap now no reason not to really.

I would have to say go with A. The less millage is good if your going to have work done. With the stock tranny and a motor thats going to be pushing out more HP its hard to know if the stock could even take it, you might have to replace it regardless. Also, B already had too many problems fixed, sounds like the car was beat on and is ready to fall apart, lol.

A. No question about it. I love the LT1 style SS's. 96 is the first year of them as well.

If you want an LS1, buy an LS1, don't play around with making a 93-97 look like a 98+. YTou can find an LS1 cheap enough. There is a nice red one for sale locally for $4,400/OBO. It has been there for a while. I'm sure he would take less.

well the owner of gearhead garage told me that the stock tranny should be fine... my hp goal is 400 rwhp on motor and he will assemble it to be supercharged ready once I decide to slap one on as far as the rear end goes im getting a new one anyway and taking the one off the Z and putting it on my v6 because that one is shot to all hell, sounds like a peanut grinder while driving it

Get what you want. by time you have the front end on & painted to match, you will be over the price you could have bought an LS1 for. Plus, the LS1 will be faster stock for stock & mod for mod.

I went with Option B... I found out it would cost me 400 bucks to fix so a total of 2400 for a 1996 Z28 it was not an SS I had assumed it was but has the SS hood. but I am extremely happy with it. what do you guys think it may be, the gears or the solenoid? because it doesnt have a check engine light so I cant even see if it gives me performance codes to see if it is the solenoid

Enjoy!

I have the hood popped in the photo, its not messed up i promise lol

Theres a way to pull codes with a hairpin, at least there was in my 91. You basically short the system from what i understand and it takes the SES light blink. You count the blinks and that's your code number. Let me try and get you better info on it.

Or if you have a laptop and a little bit of cash you can get a USB OBDII reader.

There like $40 for a standard USB one. They also make bluetooth ones but i don't see the need for them. Just google it, i haven't bought a good USB one so i cant recommend one in particular yet.

Actually, i do like this one for its compact size. Ive seen lower models of the same unit for cheaper, i just dont know the difference.
