Default Restomod: 89 IROC LS1-T56!

hey guys i want to post up my build! ive owned this car since sophmore year in high school, a little over 9 years now. only got to enjoy it one full summer, the next year i brought it out a blonde milf on her cell phone took a left on red and drove down the side of it. that was the beginning of this project, insurance payed me good so i wanted to paint the whole car but one thing lead to another and i decided i wanted to paint the engine bay, redo the underneath, add subframe connectors, 1LE brakes, 1LE rearend etc etc, and lost ambition with it years ago. i actually sold it then bought it back a year later and have been working on it again. the car is a factory 5 speed hardtop car, 305TPI, blue with black cloth. im doing away with the ancient TPI crap and going to an LS1 with the usual bolt ons, tuning, face plated t56 and a 9".
i dont know how much street time this car will see since after all this work the last thing i want is for anything to happen to it so i might as well have fun with it at the track. anyway enough blabbing here are the pics.

the day i took ownership, feb 2002

Pics From 02

Detailed, Polished 87 IROC wheels, And Lowered (right before the accident)

Hit

Bodywork

The First Time I Did The Underneath (por15 sucks)

Stripping the underneath again, por15 was peeling off. borrowing a rotisserie from a friend of mine to get the unreachable places with sandblast and so we can spray it, going to use epoxy sealer and body color base/clear

thats all the progress for now, shooting to have the underneath primed and painted within 2 weeks from now, i have to order my 9" housing and all my suspension pieces to get it rolling again. im sold on midwests fabd 9, cars getting coil overs front and rear, all spohn tubular control arms front and rear, tubular lsx swap member, strut plates etc etc. gotta sell my 99 and hunt for a wrecked donor car from the salvage auctions, cant wait to drive this car again

Really nice 3rd gen you have there. FYI, the new issue of Car Craft (August) has a couple of nice 3rd gens in it. One of 'em is on the cover.

Great project! I really love 3rd gens. I'll probably get heat for saying this fom some people, but IMO a 3rd gen with a LSX/T56 is a better car than a 4th gen.

I miss my 3rd gen!!! I had an '88GTA hardtop with the L98. That car with this drivetrain would have been amazing.

Depends on ones definition of "better". Arguably they look better, but from an engineering standpoint it's not even close.

Many cases 3rd gens are out doing 4th gens that includes road racing and drag racing just not as popular as 4th gens its really more personal preference. As far as engineering goes theirs a reason 3rd gens were the best handling car of its time even over the vette in the 85 road tests and has held its own with the 4th gens which have so much of the same engineering.

Nice to see. I owned an '87 IROC, and still miss it. I'd like to get another one, one day. Around here, they are getting about as rare as hens teeth.

Keep up the great work, looking forward to reading/seeing your progress.

OMG!! this puts mine to shame... I here u on the POR, I used it too! but I'm going back over it with tractor paint and bedliner
The problem is that if you dont have any rust it dose not adhere well, and I don't like the idea of inducing rust to my underbody to get the paint to stick.

satin black POR on my 89 RS belly

looked cool at first but then it started peeling so sanded it back down

sprayed some tractor paint (surprisingly strong)

here is the bedliner, only did the wheel wells so far
