67 camaro 454 big block
Fellas,
I have a situation on my hands that I need so direction on. I bought a 67 camaro from a buddy of mine. It has all the bodywork done (as he is a body guy) and needs paint. Very straight and all rust taken care of. The car came with a new fresh rebuild 454 big block that was bored out to I think a 468 or 486…. Something like that. Balanced blueprinted. Engine was rebuild by a guy here in town who now is an engine builder for a NASCAR driver. (Forget what one) It comes with a turbo 400 auto. Cost 10,000. My issue is I want a EFI LS engine. Or should I keep this engine and go with a carburetor. Or should I sell it. If so, what can this engine/transmission bring on the black market. What would you guys out there do? I’m sure lots of you guys have already been there done that. Any and all advice is appreciated!

It really depends on what you want. The 454 BBC is going to deliver more torque than you could possibly dream of. It will also deliver fuel economy numbers that will make a tractor trailer look like a Prius.
You're pretty set, either way. You can keep the BBC, or you can sell it and finance your entire LS swap with the money.
First you need to determine what you'll be using the car for. Is it going to the drag strip? Is it a street cruiser? Taking it to car shows? Once you figure out what you want to do with the car, you can figure out what you want to be powering the car.

I would stick with the well-built 468ci.

Keep what you have...
IF you feel the need to go FI or can't tune a carb....Look at maybe a FAST 2.0 ?

Thanks for all the responses guys. A few of you have suggested to keep the BBC. What are the pros and cons. This car will not be a drag car but I want it to flat out get with it! Street, maybe one day car shows... If I sold the combo together what would it be worth.

No idea on value of the setup, but the biggest advantage to the BBC is that, assuming it's built comparably aggressive to the LS engine you'd want to build, the ton of extra cubes will give you more torque especially at lower and mid-range rpms. That's always fun on the street. You can of course build a large cube or forced induction LS engine to deliver more torque than the common 5.3/5.7/6.0/6.2L stock displacement engines, but then you'll also have to deal with the conversion aspect if you want a factory EFI setup (plus the hassle of selling what you have and buying/building another engine).
On the totally subjective side of things, I think an old 468ci BBC in a 1st gen Camaro is much cooler than an LS setup. And that's coming from a guy that's owned at least one LS1 F-body at every given moment for the last 15+ years. Personally, while I love LS1s in modern cars, I really prefer old technology in older cars....especially when that "old tech" is able to make as much power/torque as a well built, large cube BBC.
