Default Speed limiter on 2000 SS?

I am getting ready to buy a 2000 Camaro SS when I get home from Iraq. I was wondering if it has a speed limiter, if so at what speed does it shut off, and can you program around it? My 93 Z28 didn't...unless it shut off somewhere somewhere past 160. so I was just wondering.

Thanks guys

It is 160 MPH, but you can delete (actually raise it to 256) with HPTuners.

160 mph is correct. They will actually go about 168 mph with the limiter programmed out.

I "guess" the speed limiter may have saved my life. There is a long desserted highway me and a buddy of mine know of. He has a couple of Vipers and they beat me everytime. I guess I need another MOD. It did suprise him how fast the SS was the first time we raced.

I thought only the Z28 had a top end limiter, not the SS?

Would that top speed also be for the z28?

I never took my car to the speed limit ends. Fastest I've taken her was 152.

Ain't it funny when people unaware of the top speed of camaros can't belive they go over 150. I had a co-worker who came to work one day talking about the top speed of a g35, then I told him mines still faster and he was in shock. Camaros are baddass.

Speed limiter was based on tire type from factory, SS and Z28 had no difference.

If you want to try something interesting, shift into 6th gear @ 150 and hold the pedal to the floor

Hello,

I'm living in Germany and I'm driving a 99' Z28 automatic (and I love it!).

As you probably know, it is legal and not unusual to drive as fast on the
german "Autobahn".
I've tried it a few times and my Camaro pulls strongly up to 255km/h (160mp/h)
but then the power is stopped abruptly...

But the suspension and the brakes are not designed for this speed and I had
a few VERY dangerous situations... So I'm not driving more than 160km/h
(100mp/h) anymore.

I just want to say: It is amazing how this american muscle car accelerates
on the highway.... GREAT... I love it... And imagine the irritated views of some
european Sportscar enthusiasts, who tried it but couldn't really get away from
my camaro (you must know, in Europe, American cars are seen as big,
thirsty, and very slow...) !

Holger

P.S.: I'm upgrading the suspension and the brakes in the next weeks...

yeah i have an '01 Z28

the limiter hits around 125.

I would say make sure you upgrade at least your driveshaft before using a programmer to tweak it. Most stock aluminum driveshafts are only rated to handle 160mph. and even at those speeds..they have been know to break. Upgrade to a carbon fiber before tuning. Small investment that goes a long way.

I've never heard of anyone breaking a stock aluminum driveshaft due to speed. I have seen driveshafts break drag racing. Honestly, I'd get a driveshaft loop just so you don't die if one breaks going 160.

Now if you really want to have some fun, do 155 with the t-tops off.. Thats about as fast as I got before I said 'oh ****, this is kinda stupid'.

When I got my '00 Z28 automatic dyno'd it pegged right at 155 mph. It had some rpms left but it was limited and wouldn't climb any higher in the rpms.
