Default ls motor in a 62 chevy II

hey guys ive had a 1962 chevy II that ive been restoring the body to and its getting to the point where i have to decide on the drivetrain. I am wondering how had this is going to be and what i am going to need. This car will be a street car hopefully in the low 12s and with decent handling. I am upgrading the front suspension and it will be a little bit lower too. But anyway i am just asking for advice on the ls motor swap. i also want to keep the fuel injection. thanks

Believe me it will be "HAD TO THE BONE" when you stick an ls1 in it.

Default for starters

Well, for starters, you will have to decide which way to go. Donor car with wiring harness ECM(computer) & trans or just finding a motor and maybe a trans together(auto would probably be easiest especially if it came that way) That is usually a less expensive route than getting an aftermarket wiring harness etc. There are some guys on here that have used the stock one and there are some companies that will sort it out for you & get rid of what you don't need.
Headers or stock manifolds, stock will save you about $550 plus. EFI fuel pump $175/up. A stock motor can make pretty good power, depending on how much of a gearhead you are, and that saves a bunch over bigger heads, cams and more stout trans/rear to handle it. Motor mounts can be made pretty easily or are available.
A donor 5.3l or 6.0l truck would be probably the least expensive route except the intake would most likely not clear the hood, but even with an LS intake & throttle body you would still not be in too bad.

My project was also my first. Making it run is the easy part. Making it fit is the challenging part. Don't sweat the wires piece of cake.

Mine is my first LS swap too. I took the easy route on the wires and went to Speartech. He built a custom harness for me, to my specs and reprogrammed my computer, Cost was about 800, and that included a drive by wire harness and wiring to make my cruise control work. The motor fired and ran right on the first try. Now if you are patient and can read wiring diagrams you can do the wiring mods yourself and have they ECU reprogrammed for $2-300.

You can do it!

I have a 63 that I just put an LS1 into, and was pretty easy with the TCI clip, just need to alter the trans x-member for having an overdrive in it. I also sent my wiring and computer to Speartech, took about 3 weeks to get done, but well worth it. Got Hooker2313 block hugger coated headers from summit, along with all the fuel system. Street and performance had a few other little things I needed. I wish I knew what guy you were talking about in Bishopville, because I'm in Sumter, and I need a new block. If you have any specific questions, pm me and I'll tell you as much as I know.
